Job Description: Senior Engineer – Operations

Position Overview

The Senior Engineer – Operations is responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, performance, and continuous improvement of operational systems, infrastructure, and technology services. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with operational ownership to support stable day-to-day operations, resolve complex incidents, strengthen system resilience, and improve service delivery through automation and well-defined engineering practices.

The position works closely with engineering, infrastructure, security, product, and business teams to maintain highly available services and deliver scalable, secure, and efficient operational solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Operations and Service Reliability

• Monitor the health, availability, capacity, and performance of applications, platforms, infrastructure, and critical services.
• Lead the investigation and resolution of complex production incidents, service disruptions, and performance issues.
• Participate in on-call, incident response, escalation, and support activities as required.
• Apply structured troubleshooting methods to identify root causes and restore services within agreed service levels.
• Maintain operational readiness through effective alerting, dashboards, runbooks, and support procedures.

Incident, Problem, and Change Management

• Own or support the end-to-end management of incidents, including impact assessment, communication, resolution, and post-incident review.
• Conduct root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions to reduce recurring issues.
• Plan and execute operational changes in a controlled manner, considering risk, dependencies, rollback procedures, and business impact.
• Contribute to disaster recovery, business continuity, backup, and service restoration activities.
• Ensure operational procedures and technical documentation remain current and accessible.

Automation and Continuous Improvement

• Identify repetitive, manual, or error-prone operational activities and automate them using appropriate scripting and engineering tools.
• Improve deployment, provisioning, monitoring, configuration, and maintenance processes.
• Promote Infrastructure as Code, configuration management, standardized environments, and repeatable operational practices.
• Evaluate operational workflows and recommend improvements that increase efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
• Define and track service reliability metrics, operational KPIs, and improvement targets.

Infrastructure and Technical Engineering

• Design, implement, maintain, and optimize reliable infrastructure and operational platforms.
• Support cloud, on-premises, hybrid, networking, storage, database, operating system, and application environments as applicable.
• Collaborate with development teams to improve application operability, scalability, observability, and production readiness.
• Review technical designs and provide guidance on availability, resilience, capacity, security, maintainability, and operational supportability.
• Support system upgrades, migrations, integrations, patching, capacity planning, and lifecycle management.

Security, Compliance, and Risk Management

• Apply security best practices across operational processes, systems, access controls, configurations, and production environments.
• Support vulnerability remediation, patch management, audit activities, compliance requirements, and risk assessments.
• Ensure operational changes and access activities follow approved governance and security procedures.
• Identify technical and operational risks and contribute to mitigation plans.

Collaboration and Technical Leadership

• Work effectively with cross-functional teams to coordinate releases, resolve dependencies, and deliver reliable services.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and operations team members.
• Promote knowledge sharing through documentation, technical discussions, operational reviews, and training.
• Communicate technical issues, risks, timelines, and service impacts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Contribute to engineering standards, operational policies, and best practices.

Key Requirements

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proven experience in systems engineering, site reliability engineering, DevOps, infrastructure operations, production support, or a related field.
• Experience supporting business-critical systems in a production environment.
• Demonstrated experience handling complex incidents, conducting root-cause analysis, and implementing long-term solutions.
• Experience with system monitoring, performance management, capacity planning, and operational automation.

Technical Skills

• Strong knowledge of operating systems, networking concepts, databases, application infrastructure, and troubleshooting methodologies.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Proficiency in scripting or programming languages such as Python, Bash, PowerShell, or a comparable language.
• Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, version control systems, build and deployment processes, and release management.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code and configuration management tools such as Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, or similar technologies.
• Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with observability tools covering logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, and alerting.
• Understanding of security controls, identity and access management, backup strategies, disaster recovery, and high-availability architectures.

• Familiarity with Agile, ITIL, DevSecOps, or similar delivery and service-management practices.
• Experience participating in technical architecture reviews and operational maturity initiatives.
