The Resident in Critical Care Medicine is responsible for providing comprehensive medical care to critically ill patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), and related critical care areas. The role involves assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, emergency management, monitoring of critically ill patients, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes while maintaining high standards of patient safety and clinical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients admitted to the ICU, HDU, and emergency critical care areas.
- Perform detailed history taking, physical examinations, and formulate treatment plans.
- Monitor critically ill patients and promptly identify clinical deterioration.
- Manage ventilated patients and assist in advanced airway management.
- Interpret laboratory investigations, imaging reports, ECGs, ABGs, and other diagnostic tests.
- Participate in the management of sepsis, shock, respiratory failure, cardiac emergencies, poisoning, and multi-organ dysfunction.
- Conduct daily patient rounds with consultants and implement treatment recommendations.
- Ensure timely documentation of clinical findings, treatment plans, and progress notes.
Procedures
- Assist and perform procedures as per competency and departmental protocols, including:
- Endotracheal intubation
- Arterial line insertion
- Central venous catheter insertion
- Venous blood sampling
- ABG sampling and interpretation
- Mechanical ventilator management
- Defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Basic and advanced life support procedures
