A Nurse Associate (or Nursing Associate) is a regulated healthcare professional who bridges the gap between healthcare support workers and registered nurses, delivering hands-on, person-centred care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Core Role Purpose
• Support the nursing and multidisciplinary team.
• Provide and monitor safe, patient-centered care.
• Free up Registered Nurses to focus on complex clinical duties.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Clinical Observations: Measure and record vital signs like blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration rate.
• Clinical Procedures: Undertake tasks such as venepuncture (taking blood), ECGs, and monitoring blood glucose levels.
• Patient Care & Support: Assist with daily living activities, nutrition, hydration, and maintaining patient dignity.
• Communication: Escalate concerning changes in a patient's condition or behavior to the Registered Nurse in charge.
• Family Support: Offer reassurance and emotional support to patients and their families.
Qualifications and Requirements
• Education: Typically holds a Foundation Degree (Level 5) or diploma from an accredited/approved nursing associate training program.
• Registration: Active professional registration with a governing body (such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council in the UK).
• Skills: Strong communication, basic life support, empathy, and the ability to work independently within a supervised team framework.
