Junior Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OBG)
The Junior Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynaecology is responsible for providing comprehensive care to women across outpatient, inpatient, emergency, labour room, and operation theatre settings. The role includes managing normal and high-risk pregnancies, gynaecological disorders, infertility evaluation, obstetric emergencies, surgical procedures, and preventive women's health services while ensuring adherence to clinical standards, patient safety protocols, and hospital policies.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Evaluate, diagnose, and manage obstetric and gynaecological patients in OPD and IPD settings.
- Conduct antenatal, postnatal, and gynaecological consultations.
- Manage normal and high-risk pregnancies.
- Monitor labour and conduct normal vaginal deliveries.
- Manage obstetric emergencies including:
- Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH)
- Eclampsia
- Pre-eclampsia
- Obstetric Shock
- Antepartum Hemorrhage
- Fetal Distress
- Provide family planning and contraceptive counseling.
- Evaluate and manage infertility cases.
- Provide menopausal and adolescent health services.
- Ensure accurate documentation and communication with patients and families.
Surgical Responsibilities
- Independently perform and assist in obstetric and gynaecological surgeries based on credentialing privileges.
- Perform:
- Caesarean Sections
- Dilatation & Curettage (D&C)
- Dilatation & Evacuation (D&E)
- Medical Termination of Pregnancy (as per legal guidelines)
- Tubal Ligation Procedures
- Hysteroscopy and Minor Gynaecological Procedures
- Assist in:
- Hysterectomy
- Laparoscopic Procedures
- Myomectomy
- Ovarian Surgeries
- Uro-gynaecological Procedures
Labour Room & Obstetric Care
- Attend labour room emergencies and deliveries.
- Monitor maternal and fetal well-being during labour.
- Coordinate with Neonatology and Anaesthesia teams for high-risk deliveries.
- Ensure compliance with labour room protocols and maternal safety standards.
Emergency Responsibilities
- Attend emergency obstetric and gynaecological cases on a 24/7 roster basis.
- Stabilize critically ill patients and coordinate multidisciplinary care.
- Participate in maternal code and emergency response protocols.
Quality & Patient Safety
- Adhere to NABH standards, patient safety goals, and infection control policies.
- Ensure compliance with clinical protocols and evidence-based practices.
- Participate in maternal mortality reviews, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Report adverse events and sentinel incidents as per hospital policy.
Academic Responsibilities
- Participate in CMEs, journal clubs, case presentations, and academic discussions.
- Contribute to departmental teaching and training activities.
- Support clinical research, publications, and presentations.
- Stay updated with advancements in women's health and obstetric care.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain complete and accurate medical records.
- Prepare discharge summaries, operative notes, and clinical reports.
- Coordinate with Nursing, NICU, ICU, Laboratory, Blood Bank, and other departments.
- Participate in departmental meetings, accreditation activities, and hospital committees.
