Key Responsibilities
Organ Donation Counselling
- Identify and engage with families of potential organ donors in collaboration with the clinical team.
- Provide grief counselling following declaration or anticipated declaration of brain stem death.
- Facilitate discussions regarding deceased organ donation in an empathetic, ethical, and culturally appropriate manner.
- Address concerns, myths, religious beliefs, and misconceptions related to organ donation.
- Support families through informed decision-making without coercion.
- Assist in obtaining informed consent in accordance with applicable laws and institutional policies.
Family Support
- Provide emotional support during:
- Critical illness
- Brain stem death discussions
- End-of-life care
- Bereavement
- Facilitate family meetings alongside treating consultants.
Documentation
Maintain complete documentation of:
- Counselling sessions
- Family meetings
- Consent discussions
- Organ donation outcomes
- Follow-up interactions
- Regulatory documentation
Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Monitor key performance indicators including:
- Potential donor identification
- Family approach rate
- Consent rate
- Conversion rate
- Reasons for refusal
- Time to counselling
Knowledge/ Competencies
- Human Organ Transplant Act (THOTA) / NOTTO/SOTTO regulations
