Job Description – Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Position: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Department: Emergency / Emergency Medical Services
Reports To: Emergency Department In-charge / Nursing Manager / Medical Officer
Location: Hospital / Emergency Medical Services
Job Purpose
To provide timely and appropriate pre-hospital and emergency medical support to patients, assist the clinical team during emergencies, and ensure safe patient transportation and handover while adhering to established emergency care protocols and patient-safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Emergency Patient Care
Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide immediate basic emergency care within the scope of practice.
Perform initial patient assessment, including airway, breathing, circulation, level of consciousness and vital signs.
Provide basic life support (BLS), CPR and AED support as trained and authorized.
Assist in managing trauma, medical emergencies and other urgent clinical conditions.
Monitor and document the patient's condition during emergency care and transportation.
Identify deterioration in the patient's condition and promptly escalate to the appropriate medical professional.
2. Ambulance & Patient Transportation
Prepare and check the ambulance before every shift and patient transfer.
Ensure availability and functionality of emergency equipment, oxygen, stretchers, monitoring devices and essential medical supplies.
Safely transfer and transport patients while maintaining appropriate monitoring and care.
Assist with safe patient lifting, shifting and positioning using appropriate techniques.
Maintain communication with the receiving emergency department during patient transfer when required.
Provide a structured clinical handover to the receiving medical/nursing team.
3. Clinical Support
Assist doctors, nurses and other clinical personnel during emergency procedures.
Prepare emergency equipment and supplies as instructed.
Assist with immobilization, bleeding control, oxygen administration and other approved emergency interventions within scope of practice.
Support resuscitation and emergency response activities.
Assist in maintaining emergency trolleys and equipment readiness.
4. Patient Safety & Infection Control
Follow standard precautions, hand hygiene and infection-prevention protocols.
Use appropriate PPE during emergency care and patient transportation.
Follow safe handling and disposal procedures for sharps and biomedical waste.
Ensure safe movement and transfer of patients to prevent falls and injuries.
Immediately report any patient incident, exposure or safety concern to the appropriate supervisor.
5. Documentation & Communication
Accurately document patient assessment, vital signs, interventions, transfer details and clinical observations.
Maintain ambulance/emergency service records as required.
Ensure proper documentation and handover of patient-related information.
Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with organizational privacy policies.
Communicate professionally with patients, attendants, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
6. Equipment & Inventory Management
Conduct routine checks of emergency equipment and medical supplies.
Ensure oxygen cylinders, AED/defibrillator, suction equipment, stretchers and other emergency equipment are ready for use.
Check expiry dates and availability of essential emergency consumables.
Report equipment malfunction, shortages or expired supplies immediately.
Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of the ambulance and emergency equipment.
7. Quality & Compliance
Follow hospital emergency-care protocols, SOPs and applicable regulatory requirements.
Participate in emergency drills, BLS/ACLS-related training and competency assessments as applicable.
Participate in quality-improvement and patient-safety initiatives.
Maintain professional conduct and demonstrate appropriate behaviour during high-pressure situations.
Qualifications
Educational Qualification: EMT / Emergency Medical Technician certification or relevant paramedical qualification from a recognized institution.
Valid BLS/CPR certification is preferred/required as per organizational requirements.
Additional emergency-care certifications will be an advantage.
Experience: Freshers or candidates with relevant emergency/ambulance experience may be considered, depending on organizational requirements.
