Job Description – Junior Phlebotomist
Position: Junior Phlebotomist
Department: Laboratory / Diagnostics
Reports To: Senior Phlebotomist / Lab In-charge / Laboratory Manager
Location: Hospital / Diagnostic Centre
Job Purpose
To perform safe and accurate collection, identification, handling and transportation of patient specimens while maintaining proper patient care, infection-control practices and compliance with laboratory protocols.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient & Specimen Collection
Perform venipuncture and collection of blood and other clinical specimens as per laboratory protocols.
Verify patient identity using approved identification procedures before specimen collection.
Explain the specimen collection procedure to patients and address basic queries professionally.
Ensure correct selection of collection tubes, containers and required specimens.
Label specimens accurately at the time of collection.
Handle specimens carefully to prevent contamination, leakage, hemolysis or improper storage.
2. Patient Safety & Infection Control
Follow standard precautions, hand hygiene and infection-control practices during all procedures.
Use appropriate PPE and dispose of needles, sharps and biomedical waste as per hospital policy.
Maintain a clean, safe and hygienic phlebotomy area.
Follow procedures for managing adverse reactions such as dizziness, fainting or bleeding during collection.
Immediately report any patient incident, needle-stick injury or specimen-related issue to the supervisor.
3. Specimen Handling & Transportation
Ensure collected samples are stored and transported within the prescribed time and temperature requirements.
Maintain proper specimen integrity from collection to laboratory processing.
Coordinate with laboratory staff for timely transfer of collected specimens.
Identify and report rejected, insufficient, mislabeled or unsuitable specimens.
4. Documentation & Records
Maintain accurate records of specimen collection and dispatch.
Update required information in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) / Hospital Information System (HIS).
Ensure proper documentation of difficult collections, incidents and rejected specimens.
Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory records.
5. Equipment & Supplies
Ensure availability of blood collection tubes, needles, syringes, swabs, PPE and other required supplies.
