Position: Deputy Clinical Nurse Lead
Department: Nursing / Clinical Operations
Reports To: Clinical Nurse Lead / Nursing Manager / Nursing Superintendent
Location: Hospital / Healthcare Facility
Job Purpose
To support the Clinical Nurse Lead in providing effective clinical leadership, ensuring high standards of patient care, nursing practice, patient safety and compliance with clinical protocols. The role is responsible for supporting nursing teams, monitoring clinical standards, coordinating day-to-day operations and facilitating continuous improvement in nursing services.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Leadership & Patient Care
Support the Clinical Nurse Lead in ensuring safe, evidence-based and patient-centred nursing care.
Monitor nursing practices and ensure compliance with clinical protocols, SOPs and care standards.
Conduct regular rounds and review patient-care practices across assigned clinical areas.
Identify changes in patient condition and ensure timely escalation to doctors and senior nursing leadership.
Support effective management of emergency and critical clinical situations.
Ensure appropriate documentation of patient assessment, care plans, interventions and outcomes.
2. Nursing Team Management
Supervise and guide nursing staff in assigned clinical areas.
Support staff allocation, deployment and shift management based on patient acuity and workload.
Assist in maintaining adequate staffing levels and addressing manpower gaps.
Monitor attendance, punctuality, discipline and professional conduct of nursing staff.
Support orientation and induction of newly joined nursing personnel.
Identify training and competency requirements and coordinate with the Nursing Manager/Clinical Nurse Lead.
3. Quality & Patient Safety
Ensure compliance with patient-safety standards and nursing quality indicators.
Monitor medication safety, infection prevention and control practices, falls prevention and other clinical safety initiatives.
Participate in clinical audits, incident reviews and quality improvement initiatives.
Support implementation of corrective and preventive actions arising from audits and incidents.
Promote a culture of patient safety, clinical accountability and continuous improvement.
4. Training & Competency Development
Assist in identifying clinical training needs of nursing staff.
Conduct or coordinate training, demonstrations and competency assessments.
Support continuing nursing education and skill-development programs.
Monitor compliance with mandatory training and certification requirements.
5. Documentation & Compliance
Ensure accurate and timely completion of nursing documentation and clinical records.
Monitor compliance with hospital policies, nursing SOPs, statutory requirements and accreditation standards.
Prepare and review nursing-related reports, audits and performance data.
Maintain confidentiality of patient and employee information.
6. Coordination & Communication
Coordinate with doctors, nursing teams, allied healthcare professionals and support departments for smooth patient care.
Act as a communication link between the Clinical Nurse Lead and nursing staff.
Address routine clinical and operational concerns and escalate critical issues appropriately.
Communicate departmental instructions, policy changes and clinical updates to nursing teams.
7. Operational Support
Support the Clinical Nurse Lead in daily nursing operations and service delivery.
Assist with nursing manpower planning and duty roster requirements.
Monitor availability and appropriate use of nursing equipment, medicines and consumables.
Ensure readiness of clinical areas, emergency equipment and essential nursing supplies.
Support implementation of new clinical processes and service improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Educational Qualification: B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.
Valid registration with the applicable State Nursing Council / Indian Nursing Council, as applicable.
Postgraduate qualification in Nursing / Hospital Administration / Healthcare Management will be an added advantage.
Experience: Relevant clinical nursing experience with demonstrated exposure to nursing supervision/clinical coordination.
