Job Description

US – Seattle only: This position is open to candidates in the Seattle, WA area. You will have a hybrid remote/in-office schedule where you will work from our casual, pet-friendly office at least 3 days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).

Trupanion is seeking a Sr. Software Engineer, Android, to help design, build, and support innovative mobile experiences that advance our mission of helping pets receive the veterinary care they need. As a member of a cross-functional product and engineering team, you will develop native Android applications, collaborate with business and technical stakeholders, and own solutions throughout their lifecycle, from requirements and design through production deployment and ongoing support.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain native Android applications using Kotlin and modern Android development frameworks. 

  • Partner closely with Product Managers, UX Designers, QA Engineers, and backend development teams to translate business objectives and customer needs into scalable technical solutions. 

  • Own software solutions end-to-end, from understanding business requirements and technical design through implementation, production deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and continuous improvement. 

  • Participate in architecture reviews and technical design discussions, contributing to application architecture, design standards, performance optimization, scalability, maintainability, and security best practices. 

  • Apply secure-by-design principles during solution development, identifying and addressing security, privacy, data protection, and compliance considerations early in the software lifecycle. 

  • Champion a shift-left approach to quality by proactively incorporating testing, validation, observability, and reliability considerations throughout the development process. 

  • Author and maintain automated unit tests, developer functional tests, and other testing assets to ensure application reliability and support continuous delivery practices. 

  • Collaborate with backend teams to validate integrations with internal insurance technology platforms, enterprise services, and third-party partner APIs. 

  • Execute and support integration testing activities to ensure end-to-end functionality across mobile applications and dependent systems. 

  • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback that improves code quality, maintainability, security, and team knowledge sharing. 

  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, build automation, release management processes, and software development best practices. 

  • Manage application deployment activities, including preparing, publishing, and maintaining releases within the Google Play Store ecosystem. 

  • Monitor application health, performance, and operational metrics, proactively identifying and resolving issues before they impact customers. 

  • Troubleshoot production issues and support root cause analysis, remediation efforts, and continuous improvement activities. 

  • Participate in an on-call support rotation, partnering with engineering and operational teams to diagnose and resolve critical production incidents when necessary. 

  • Continuously evaluate emerging Android technologies, frameworks, and development practices to improve platform capabilities and developer effectiveness.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 3+ years of professional software development experience with hands-on native Android application development. 

  • Strong proficiency in Kotlin and the Android development ecosystem. 

  • Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs and integrating with backend services. 

  • Experience with software design patterns, application architecture, and modern mobile development practices. 

  • Experience writing automated unit and functional tests. 

  • Experience using source control systems such as Git and participating in peer code review processes. 

  • Strong understanding of secure software development principles and application security best practices. 

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills. 

  • Ability to independently own features and deliver results in a fast-paced, agile environment. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience with Jetpack Compose, Android Jetpack libraries, Coroutines, Flow, and modern Android architecture patterns. 

  • Experience publishing and supporting applications in the Google Play Store. 

  • Experience integrating with enterprise platforms, insurance systems, and third-party partner APIs. 

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevOps practices. 

  • Experience with monitoring, telemetry, and observability tools. 

  • Experience supporting production systems and participating in on-call rotations. 

  • Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and distributed systems. 

  • Experience applying SOLID design principles and object-oriented design best practices. 

  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders. 

  • Demonstrated sense of urgency, accountability, and ownership in delivering business outcomes and resolving customer-impacting issues. 

  • Passion for continuous learning, innovation, and improving engineering excellence. 

Additional Information

Compensation

  • The base salary range for this position is $160,000 - $170,000 on a full-time schedule.
  • Along with base compensation, Trupanion employees are currently eligible for monthly bonuses.
  • We want all employees to be invested in Trupanion’s success, so we grant Restricted Stock Units to all new team members. Our new hire grants vest over 4 years.
