Position Summary

As an organic chemist you will help develop and synthesize our multifunctional organic nanomaterials. This role will collaborate closely with our surface science and computational chemistry teams to improve the performance of our target molecules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, optimize, and troubleshoot multistep synthesis of organic and organometallic compounds.
  • Characterize, isolate, and purify sensitive target compounds.
  • Coordinate with chemistry lab members to keep lab fully operational.
  • Collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team to design new synthetic targets.
  • Contribute chemical expertise to surface science projects.

Qualifications

Mandatory Requirements

  • Legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Fluent in English (speak, read, write).

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD degree in chemistry with a focus on multistep organic synthesis.
  • Expertise in physical chemistry and mechanistic investigations.
  • Laboratory skills including Schlenk and glovebox techniques, ability to execute air and water sensitive chemical reactions, ability to isolate volatile reaction products, and the ability to work on milligram to multigram scale reactions, structural confirmation by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, interpretation of LC-MS data, High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) operation, recrystallization, preparative chromatographic separations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in main group chemistry; previous experience synthesizing boron, nitrogen, or phosphorous containing compounds is desirable.
  • Knowledge of electrochemistry, cyclic voltammetry, and redox reactions.
  • Experience operating analytical instruments (e.g., XPS, FTIR, HPLC-MS, NMR).
  • Proven record of expertise in other physical chemistry or materials chemistry techniques (surface science, photochemistry, etc.) is also highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of UHV systems and SPM techniques.
