Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

The School of Education and Social Practice within Te Pūtahi Mātauranga | Faculty of Arts and Education is seeking a Lecturer in Secondary Social Studies Education to help shape the next generation of secondary Social Studies teachers and contribute to the ongoing development of the discipline.

Drawing on your experience in both secondary and tertiary Social Studies education, you will contribute to the delivery and development of our teacher education programmes, supervise postgraduate students and develop a programme of high-quality research with scholarly and societal impact.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching and contributing to curriculum development across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • Supervising postgraduate students and contributing to the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Developing and disseminating high-quality research, and pursuing opportunities for research collaboration and funding.
  • Contributing to course and programme leadership, academic service and relationships across the wider education community.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) permanent position (subject to continuation).

The workload split is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service.

The salary range for this role is $99,788 - $119,204 per annum.

Remuneration depends on experience and achievements, and is aligned with our Academic Standards policy.

He kōrero mōu | About you

You are an experienced Social Studies educator with a strong understanding of secondary education and a commitment to preparing future teachers. You bring experience teaching and leading Social Studies in secondary schools, alongside tertiary teaching experience and a proven record of high-quality research.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A PhD in Social Studies or a closely related discipline
  • Experience teaching and leading Social Studies and related subjects, such as History or Classics, at secondary school level.
  • Experience teaching Social Studies education at the tertiary level.
  • A proven record of high-quality research and publications, with demonstrable scholarly and societal impact.
  • Experience teaching or undertaking research in culturally and/or linguistically diverse communities.
  • Strong communication, collaboration and relationship-building skills.

Current New Zealand teacher registration, familiarity with national curriculum and education policy, and knowledge of evidence-informed approaches such as culturally responsive, inclusive or digital pedagogies will be advantageous.
