About this role

Job Summary

Tax Consultant:

 

A Tax IT consultant needs to have a comprehensive understanding of how tax functions preferred in Oil and Gas business.

 

 

1. Deep Tax Domain and Process Understanding

 

·                  Knowledge of indirect tax types (GST/HST/PST/QST, US sales/use, excise, commodity taxes)

  • Understanding of complex tax sales and purchase scenarios (intercompany, exemptions, self-assessed tax, cross-border rules)
  • Awareness of regulatory compliance and audit requirements (CRA, IRS, etc.)
  • Ability to interpret business transactions and tax implications early in design

 

 

2. SAP S/4HANA Tax Configuration & Functional Expertise

 

Suncor environment is heavily SAP-driven:

·                  Strong tax relevant processes understanding of SAP modules:

o        Finance, Sales (P2C including IS-OIL), Supply chain (P2P including Fieldglass, Ariba, VIM), SAP-DRC

  • Knowledge of:

o        Tax determination logic in SAP

o        Tax codes, condition techniques, pricing

o        Master data dependencies (BP, material, plant, etc.)

  • Ability to troubleshoot:

o        Incorrect tax determination

    • Origin/destination issues
    • Posting and reporting inconsistencies

Key Responsibilities

3. Tax Engine & Integration Expertise (Critical at Suncor)

 

Suncor relies on external engines like OneSource and Avalara:

·                  Hands-on understanding of:

o        Thomson Reuters OneSource Determination (Sabrix) - for US and Canada Sales Tax

o        Avalara (ATE/ARE for commodity tax) - for US Excise Tax

o        SAP - for Canada Excise Tax and International (Countries except US and Canada) Taxes

  • Knowledge of integration patterns:

o        SAP → RFC/API → Tax Engine

  • Ability to troubleshoot:

o        Interface failures

    • Incorrect jurisdiction determination
    • Mapping / configuration issues
