VISION


At the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA), we celebrate and honour the safety and healing of Indigenous Women and Girls as they take up their leadership roles in the family, community, provincially, nationally and internationally for generations to come.


SCOPE


Reporting to the Branch Manager, the Community Wellness Worker is responsible for developing, providing, facilitating and/or coordinating a variety of local programming relating to reducing or preventing family and community violence, including community-based family violence awareness and prevention education campaigns or activities in local settings (i.e. schools) or at local community events.


The Community Wellness Worker implements the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy (AHWS) at 
the local level in order to reduce family violence and promote healthy lifestyles through culture-based 
programming and healing.


QUALIFICATIONS


SKILLS:


  • Post-secondary diploma in Health Sciences, Social Services, Human Services, Indigenous Studies, 
    Community Development, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of related experience supporting Indigenous individuals, families, and communities through community-based health, wellness, healing, or social service programs.
  • Experience providing community-based services, support, case coordination, and wellness programming.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous individuals, families, and communities.
  • Strong crisis intervention, support, advocacy, and referral skills.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, presentations, healing circles, support groups, and community events.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, and time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong listening, relationship-building, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with community members, Elders, service providers, and stakeholders.
  • Experience maintaining accurate records, documentation, client files, and program reports.
  • Strong presentation and public education skills.
  • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, internet-based systems, databases, and office technology.

KNOWLEDGE:


  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, teachings, and community strengths.
  • Knowledge of current issues impacting Indigenous women, families, and communities.
  • Understanding of family violence prevention, trauma, healing, addictions, mental wellness, and community development approaches.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous family dynamics, family systems, and community healing approaches.
  • Knowledge of community resources, referral pathways, and service delivery systems.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention, case management, and support services.
  • Understanding of culturally safe, client-centred, and trauma-informed service delivery practices.
  • Knowledge of not-for-profit organizations and community-based service delivery models.
  • Understanding of ONWA’s vision, mandate, strategic priorities, and Indigenous women-centered approaches.
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous language is considered an asset.

The full salary range for this role is $49,500- $60,778 ONWA conducts annual performance reviews, and employees may be eligible for salary adjustments based on performance outcomes and available funding.
