Position Purpose:
The Assistant Director of Recreation: Competitive Sports provides leadership and oversight for competitive sports and related recreation programs, including program development, student leadership, personnel management, risk management, budgeting, assessment, and event operations. The position also provides assigned operational oversight of the Wellness Center and other Recreation & Wellness facilities, supporting safe, effective, welcoming, and student-centered facility operations. The position works collaboratively with University departments, students, staff, coaches, external organizations, and community partners to advance the mission and strategic priorities of Recreation & Wellness.


Responsibilities:

1) Competitive Sports Program Leadership: Responsible for the development, implementation, administration, and continuous improvement of Recreation & Wellness competitive sports programs.

  • Develop, implement, administer, and evaluate competitive sports and related recreation programs, policies, procedures, eligibility requirements, and operating guidelines in alignment with departmental and University goals.
  • Coordinate and oversee leagues, tournaments, competitions, special events, and club sport programs, including advising student officers and organizational leadership.
  • Develop and implement risk management and safety practices for competitive sports and club sport programs, including facility use, equipment, travel, emergency response, and follow-up related to incidents, injuries, and emergencies.
  • Coordinate travel-related processes and monitor program compliance with university policies, departmental procedures, league/conference requirements, and applicable governing-body standards.
  • Develop and coordinate marketing, communications, and promotional strategies while ensuring programs and facilities are accessible, inclusive, and responsive to accommodation needs.
  • Collect, analyze, and report participation, engagement, satisfaction, incident, and other program data to assess effectiveness, identify risks, and inform continuous program improvement.

2) Personnel Management: Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, develop, and evaluate student, graduate, temporary, volunteer, and/or part-time personnel associated with competitive sports and assigned recreation operations.

  • Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate student and temporary employees, ensuring clear expectations for performance, conduct, safety, and compliance.
  • Provide ongoing direction, support, coaching, and performance feedback to staff and address personnel matters in accordance with university policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement staff training and professional development opportunities that support effective job performance and continuous growth.
  • Advise, mentor, and support student leaders involved in club sports and competitive recreation programs, providing opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, communication, decision-making, and organizational skills.
  • Coordinate with coaches, student leaders, and program staff to promote effective communication, collaboration, accountability, and consistent program operations.
  • Review and approve employee time records and required personnel documentation while promoting an inclusive, welcoming, and student-centered environment for participants, staff, and facility users.

3) Administrative Management: Develop, administer, monitor, and evaluate financial and administrative operations associated with competitive sports

  • Develop and administer annual operating budgets for assigned programs and operational areas; monitor revenue, expenditures, budget balances, and financial activity.
  • Review and approve expenditures within delegated authority and in accordance with university policies and procedures, including monitoring and reconciling competitive sports revenue and expenses.
  • Coordinate purchasing and procurement of equipment, supplies, services, travel, and other program needs, and identify opportunities for cost efficiencies and effective resource utilization.
  • Coordinate with office assistant staff contracts for coaches, officials, vendors, external agencies, independent contractors, and other program partners as required.
  • Maintain accurate records related to program finances, contracts, purchasing, travel, inventory, and other administrative activities, and monitor departmental equipment, supplies, and assets.
  • Support club sport teams with fundraising, sponsorship, revenue generation, and other resource-development initiatives as appropriate.

4) Facility Operations & Management:  Provide assigned operational oversight of the Wellness Center and other Recreation & Wellness facilities to support safe, efficient, welcoming, and effective facility operations.

  • Provide day-to-day operational oversight of assigned Wellness Center and recreation facility areas, ensuring cleanliness, safety, accessibility, appearance, equipment condition, and overall facility readiness.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections; identify maintenance, repair, equipment, and facility improvement needs; and coordinate appropriate follow-up with university personnel and external vendors.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of facility operating, safety, and emergency response policies and procedures.
  • Monitor appropriate use of recreation spaces and coordinate facility scheduling and operational support for competitive sports, recreation programs, tournaments, competitions, special events, and general facility users.
  • Monitor recreation equipment inventories and coordinate equipment maintenance, replacement, procurement, and related resource needs.

5) Perform other duties of a similar nature and level of responsibility as assigned in support of Recreation & Wellness and the mission of the University


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Sport Management, Sports Administration, Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Physical Education, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field.
  • Two years of professional experience in recreation, competitive sports, club sports, intramural sports, recreation facility operations, or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of recreation programming, including competitive sports, club sports, intramural sports, and related recreation and wellness programs.
  • Knowledge of recreation and facility operations, including scheduling, equipment management, safety, maintenance coordination, and customer service.
  • Knowledge of risk management principles and practices related to recreational programming, events, travel, and facility operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate professional, student, graduate, and/or temporary staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, events, operational priorities, and competing responsibilities while exercising sound judgment and working effectively within established policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, organizational, and technological skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office or comparable productivity software and technology platforms.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office or comparable productivity software and technology platforms used for recreation programming, facility scheduling, participant registration, sport league management, staff scheduling, communication, assessment, and financial administration.

Other Requirements:

The position requires the ability to move throughout recreation and wellness facilities, athletic and recreation venues, offices, and outdoor recreation areas. The employee may be required to stand and/or walk for extended periods and occasionally lift, carry, move, or arrange recreation equipment, supplies, and materials. Some competitive sports and recreation activities occur in outdoor areas with uneven or irregular terrain and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions.

Work Shift (Hours / Days of work):
This position typically operates on a Monday through Friday schedule; however, flexibility is required to support competitive sports and recreational programming needs. Regular evening and weekend hours are expected during sports seasons, tournaments, special events, and periods of high facility utilization. Occasional after-hours and on-call responsibilities may be required to respond to program, event, facility, or emergency-related situations.
