Animals Asia is currently seeking to recruit a qualified candidate for the position Veterinary Nurse, China with details as follows:

Role Purpose: The veterinary nurse is a key support role for the veterinary surgeons while also contributing to training and supervision of the Chinese Veterinary Interns and Junior Veterinary Surgeons. Veterinary nurses contribute an important veterinary nursing perspective which ensures the department meets the standards set by Animals Asia, CBRC, the Global Federation for Animal Sanctuaries and internal departmental key performance indicators.


Responsibilities:          


  • Veterinary training package that considers the perspectives of veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses and veterinary para-professionals. Capacity building is a responsibility of all technical experts at the Chengdu Bear Rescue Centre (CBRC).
  • Maintaining anaesthesia of bears and other animals under the indirect supervision of the veterinary surgeon leading the case and ensuring an accurate record of decision making and measured parameters is maintained and reported as needed while responding to radio calls as needed for the veterinary team involved in the procedure.
  • Assumes a supervisory role for the small animal clinic to oversee: appointment bookings, client interactions, the maintaining of all records and databases, provision of preventative medicine including parasite treatments and vaccinations, and the provision of nursing care to patients and clients seen at the clinic.
  • For the areas under veterinary control, ensure maintenance of equipment and infrastructure repairs, cleanliness, accurate stock ordering of medications consumables and equipment.
  • Take a supervisory role in the preventative medicine of the bears including faecal floats and endoparasite treatments and monthly bear checks.
  • Lead systems to ensure provision of the medical plans prescribed by the veterinary surgeons and work collaboratively with the bear team managers to ensure necessary information is communicated and that the systems of treatment provision are followed including the delivery of oral and topical medications to be used by the bear care teams.
  • Provide nursing care to bears in hospital including accurate recording in the hospital records.
  • As delegated: supervise, lead or partake in training for emergencies including darting and CPR training.
  • Follow all protocols and procedures and assist in the process to ensure that all protocols and procedures maintain relevance by ensuring they updated to reflect the best evidence and current understanding of how to apply it.

 

Requirements:


Skills / Abilities

  • A passion for teaching with the desire to motivate and inspire staff by sharing their veterinary nursing skills to develop these skills in others.
  • Must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Ability to be flexible in working patterns consisting of periods of clinical work, desk.
    work and off-site work.
  • Experience with multiparameter monitors including methods to measure blood pressure, capnography and pulse oximetry.
  • Understanding of the difference between dangerous animal nursing care when compared with domestic species.
  • A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team.

Knowledge

  • Passion for veterinary anaesthesia with a sound understanding of inhalational anaesthesia including how the machine and circuits used to deliver it work.
  • Proficient computer skills including the use of document editors (eg. Microsoft Word and Google Docs), spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets) and presentation software (Microsoft Powerpoint and Google Slides).
  • Application of evidence based veterinary medicine and its use in practice.
  • A sound knowledge of routine laboratory procedures and use of equipment.

Experience

  • At least 3 years post qualification experience in general or mixed veterinary practice, zoo medicine or a specialist referral centre where monitoring anaesthesia and procedure set up were key tasks of the role.
  • Working experience in Asia, preference in China.

Languages

  • Fluent Mandarin and English, both written and spoken.

Education

  • Degree or Diploma (including Cert IV in Australia) in Veterinary Nursing or Veterinary Technology that is recognised by the applicants National or State Veterinary (Nursing) Board or Association.
  • Continued professional development in clinical veterinary nursing skills and techniques.
