The Senior Underwriter serves as a trusted underwriting and risk management partner for a long-term, reputable self-insured public entity program, collaborating with clients, brokers, and internal teams to drive successful outcomes. The position combines strategic analysis, relationship management, and subject matter expertise to identify risk trends, develop underwriting recommendations, ensure regulatory compliance, and support long-term program performance. Through data-driven insights and clear communication with executive leadership and governing boards, this role helps clients make informed decisions while advancing CCMSI's commitment to excellence, partnership, and service.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Account Manager to ensure all items related to the account are carried out in a timely and efficient manner as well as work with various areas within CCMSI to ensure all duties are carried out correctly and in compliance with state requirements.
  • Serve as the primary strategic underwriter and risk analyst for workers compensation self-insured public entity program.
  • Develop and maintain dedicated goal-oriented relationships with Client, board members, brokers, and members of self-insured group.
  • Assist Account Manager and Client in development and delivery of presentations, reports, and strategic planning materials and analysis for client leadership and governing boards. Transform and present detailed technical analysis into clear, concise, and actionable recommendations tailored to Client and Board of Directors.
  • Underwrite and establish premiums for each member of the self-insured group and any prospective member of the self-insured group based on established set underwriting guidelines and state regulatory requirements.
  • Perform financial projection and funding each fiscal year for upcoming renewal to determine premium. Present to Client for approval.
  • Compile aggregate data to analyze risks, claims, financials, and exposure to assist in identifying trends and provide underwriting recommendations and prepare excess submissions. This includes monitoring program performance and coordinating cross functional resources to ensure successful risk management.
  • Perform annual premium adjustments of members policies based on actual payroll exposure.
  • Provide regular communication with Client, members and agents answering technical coverage questions and special requests.
  • Monitor program performance and proactively identify opportunities for improvement, cost containment, and operational efficiencies. Utilize sound judgment to balance client expectations, organize priorities, and follow underwriting best practices.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of the WCRIBMA rules and regulations and self-insurance pooling regulations for public entities in the state of Massachusetts.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate brings a strong combination of underwriting, risk management, and client consulting experience, with the ability to analyze complex data, communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, and develop strategic solutions that support long-term program success. Experience working with Massachusetts Self-Insured Groups (SIGs) is desired, including knowledge of self-insurance program structures, workers' compensation regulations (WCRIBMA), and public entity risk management. Successful candidates will demonstrate sound judgment, strong relationship-building skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while delivering exceptional service. 

 

Education and/or Experience                                                       

  • Bachelor degree with two years in Underwriting function or five years in Underwriting function.
  • 10-15 years experience. 
  • Obtain familiarity with applicable industry regulations.
    • MA SIG group experience mandatory
    • Knowledge of MA Regulations for self-insured groups
    • Familiarity with MA Division of Insurance
    • Direct Supervision and over-site of Payroll audit process

Computer Skills                                                       

Proficient with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. 

 

Nice to Have:

  • Bilingual (Spanish) proficiency — highly valued for communicating with claimants, employers, or vendors, but not required. 
  • AU or ARM designation or in progress.

The posted salary reflects CCMSI’s good-faith estimate in accordance with applicable pay transparency laws. Actual compensation will be based on qualifications, experience, geographic location, and internal equity.
