Who We Are Seeking: We are seeking an experienced, community-focused law enforcement leader who is committed to Tribal sovereignty, public safety, and serving with integrity. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, culturally-responsive professional who builds trust, develops strong teams, and leads with accountability and respect. Our next Tribal Chief of Police will be a strategic leader who values partnerships, strengthens community relationships, and is dedicated to protecting the community while advancing a modern, professional, and service-oriented police department.

 

Responsibilities: Provide leadership and oversight for all Tribal Police Department operations, including staff supervision, patrol and investigations, strategic planning, budgeting, grant management, and policy compliance. Build strong partnerships with Tribal, local, state, and federal agencies; represent the department at community and interagency meetings; promote community-oriented policing; and ensure ongoing staff development, professional standards, and accountability while advancing Tribal public safety and sovereignty.

 

Qualifications, Education & Experience: 

  • 5–10 years of progressive law enforcement leadership experience, preferably in Alaska.
  • Previous command-level experience (Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Chief, or Chief) preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Management, or a related field preferred; an equivalent combination of education and extensive law enforcement experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust, lead diverse teams, and collaborate with Tribal, local, state, and federal partners.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented, and high-pressure environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new records and case management systems.



Certificates and Licenses: A valid Alaska driver's license and the ability to be insured under CVTC's vehicle insurance policy are required. The successful candidate must possess current Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) certification as a Police Officer or be eligible to obtain APSC certification through reciprocity. Graduation from an APSC-approved basic law enforcement academy, or an equivalent academy recognized by the APSC for reciprocity, is required.

 

Pre-Employment Drug Screening and Background Check: Employment is contingent upon successfully completing all applicable pre-employment requirements, including: a comprehensive criminal history and background investigation, pre-employment drug screening, psychological evaluation, medical/fitness-for-duty examination, and any additional hiring requirements established by the CVTC Tribal Police Department, including a polygraph examination.

 

Hiring Preferences: As allowed in P.L. 93-638, preference for employment will be given to Alaska Native and American Indian peoples. CVTC also applies family and local hiring preferences.
