Job Summary:  

A Superintendent of Traffic Signal Installation directs the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical traffic control devices and related equipment. Work of this class involves directing the activities of installation and maintenance work units.

Incumbents receive general supervision from an administrative superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek; subject to callback for emergency situations. Work is performed primarily in an office setting, where there are few uncomfortable working conditions; however, inclement weather and traffic hazards may be encountered at outdoor work sites. Work requires minimal physical exertion.

Minimum Qualifications:                             

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:  

Education: Have an associate degree from an accredited college or university. 

AND 

Experience: Have five years of experience in the maintenance and installation of traffic signal devices, traffic engineering or traffic investigation work including two years of such lead responsibilities as assigning, reviewing and approving the work of others.

OR 

Equivalency Notes: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. Non-specialized experience or education may not be substituted for the required special experience.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit. PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE OR LEARNER PERMITS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of traffic control devices and systems.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical construction and steel pole installation.
  • Knowledge of the problems and conditions that affect a municipal traffic signal system and its operation.
  • Administrative ability.
  • Ability to write equipment and material specifications.
  • Ability to maintain effective liaison with public utilities, City, State and Federal agencies, community organizations and the general public.
  • Ability to develop and execute long and short range programs and policies for a major City operation.
  • Ability to maintain records, prepare reports and compile budget proposals.

Background Check                                        

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed. 

Probation 

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.

Eligibility 

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

Education Accreditation 

Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org. 

Selection Process

The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. Examination Process 

Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the minimum qualifications for this recruitment. Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months. 

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete supplemental questions to further examine specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of the position. Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.
