Senior GIS Analyst – Synthetic Environments

We are seeking an experienced Senior GIS Analyst to support the development of high-fidelity synthetic environments for defense training, mission rehearsal, and operational analysis systems.

This role will focus on the acquisition, extraction, attribution, editing, transformation, quality control, and maintenance of curated geospatial vector data used in terrain generation and modeling, simulation, and training environments. The Senior GIS Analyst will work closely with product owners, software engineers, data specialists, and subject-matter experts to deliver accurate, interoperable, and production-ready geospatial content.

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in GIS data processing, terrain database generation, geospatial automation, and 3D simulation content development. This position also requires the ability to lead technical efforts, establish repeatable workflows, mentor less-experienced analysts, and support delivery within an Agile development environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation and processing of geospatial datasets for synthetic-environment and simulation applications.
  • Acquire and compile geospatial data from diverse sources, including satellite imagery, orthorectified and georeferenced imagery, hardcopy charts, field observations, existing maps, OpenStreetMap, and local government sources.
  • Extract, digitize, clean, attribute, edit, generalize, validate, and maintain curated vector features, including transportation, hydrography, structures, vegetation, terrain, and other terrain-related content.
  • Review and refine AI-extracted features and other machine-assisted source data for geometry, attribution, completeness, usability, and production readiness.
  • Perform spatial analysis, coordinate-system transformations, conflation, generalization, and data conversion.
  • Process imagery, vector features, hydrography, transportation networks, structures, vegetation, and other terrain-related data.
  • Develop and enforce GIS data standards, schemas, metadata requirements, and quality-control procedures.
  • Conduct detailed geospatial quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), including topology validation, geometry checks, attribution reviews, completeness assessments, and positional accuracy evaluations.
  • Develop repeatable workflows and automation scripts to improve data-processing efficiency and consistency.
  • Produce technical documentation, processing guides, data dictionaries, test procedures, and project reports.
  • Support software testing, component testing, technical demonstrations, user evaluations, source incorporation, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Participate in Agile planning, sprint reviews, demonstrations, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.
  • Collaborate with product owners, engineers, developers, testers, and other GIS professionals.
  • Provide mentorship to junior and mid-level analysts.
  • Work effectively in security-conscious development environments.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Geomatics, Cartography, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least 7 years of professional experience in GIS, geospatial data processing, terrain-data production, or a related field.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Esri ArcGIS, including ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcMap.
  • Professional experience with Safe Software FME for data transformation, translation, validation, and workflow automation.
  • Working knowledge of QGIS and open-source geospatial tools.
  • Strong understanding of coordinate reference systems, projections, datums, georeferencing, geospatial data models, and metadata.
  • Experience processing common GIS formats, including shapefiles, file geodatabases, GeoPackages, GeoJSON, KML/KMZ, imagery, raster elevation data, and point clouds.
  • Experience with geospatial data quality assurance and quality control.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any required security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with terrain database generation or geospatial content development for modeling, simulation, and training systems.
  • Experience with 3D GIS, multipatch data, 3D mesh, LiDAR, point clouds, photogrammetry, or digital elevation models.
  • Experience using GeoMedia, Global Mapper, OSGViewer, Creator, GIMP, or comparable geospatial visualization tools.
  • Familiarity with spatial databases and enterprise GIS, including PostgreSQL/PostGIS and ArcGIS Enterprise.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development and issue-tracking with Jira.
  • Familiarity with testing, configuration management, version control, and DevSecOps practices.
  • Experience working with 3D Tiles.
  • Familiarity with web GIS, OGC services, and geospatial APIs, including WMS, WMTS, WFS, REST, and GeoPackage.

Competencies

Data stewardship • Geospatial analysis • Imagery interpretation • Vector editing and attribution • QA/QC • Production workflow design • Technical leadership • Customer coordination • Technical writing • Secure-environment operations • Continuous improvement
