About this role

About Redwood Materials

Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Summary:

The Staff Electrical Engineer, Balance of Plant (BoP) will focus on the design, modeling, and protection of the electrical infrastructure supporting Redwood’s utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This role is responsible for executing critical power system studiesincluding load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, and arc flash analysiswhile sizing major electrical equipment like transformers, switchgear, and protective relays. You will bridge high-voltage grid requirements with system-level BESS architectures, ensuring all installations comply with NEC, IEEE, and local utility codes.

At Redwood Materials, we aren't just recycling batteries, we are building the utility-scale infrastructure that will power the future clean energy grid. As a Staff Electrical Engineer, BOP, you will own the electrical design, modeling, and safety coordination for our GWh-scale energy storage sites. If you have deep expertise in commissioning microgrids, a strong grasp of protective relay coordination, and want to build the physical backbone for a circular energy economy, this is your opportunity to shape the grid of tomorrow.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Perform and review balance-of-plant power system studies including load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, DC and AC arc flash, transformer energization, motor starting, reactive power analysis, transient overvoltage, harmonic analysis, insulation coordination, grounding design, battery sizing, and auxiliary system sizing
  • Work closely with the energy storage team to develop accurate AC and DC system models and study assumptions
  • Develop, review, and validate protective relay coordination studies, relay settings, and configuration files
  • Size and specify major electrical equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, switches, inverters, generators, capacitor banks, reactors, surge arresters, switchgear, current transformers, power cables, and UPS systems
  • Create and maintain detailed power system models using ETAP, SKM, and/or EasyPower
  • Apply industry standards, codes, and best practices to analysis results and design recommendations (IEEE, ANSI, IEC)
  • Prepare clear engineering reports, study summaries, and design documentation for internal and external stakeholders

Desired Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of direct experience designing and commissioning PV and BESS systems.
  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering with specialization in power systems
  • Strong foundation in power system analysis including fault calculations, symmetrical components, arc flash calculations, cable sizing, and protective device selection and coordination
  • Expert proficiency in ETAP is required; experience with SKM or EasyPower is highly preferred
  • Experience with grounding and cable ampacity analysis tools such as CYMCAP and CDEGS is preferred
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards including NEC, IEEE, and related industry practice
  • Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS), inverter-based generation, and/or data center electrical systems is a plus
  • Familiarity with short circuit and protective relay software tools such as ASPEN and/or CAPE is a plus
  • Familiarity with PSCAD and/or PSS®E is a plus
  • Familiarity with Python for analysis automation or data processing is a plus

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform the essential job functions consistent safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards

Working Conditions:

  • Environment, such as office or outdoors
  • Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time
  • Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing
  • Occasional work weekends, nights, or be on-call as a regular part of the job
  • Occasional travel requirements

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
