About the team and the role:

As a member of our GraphQL champions community, you will help shape how eBay evolves its business and technology capabilities through scalable, high-quality API experiences. In this role, you will work closely with senior technology leaders, architects, and product owners to streamline product integration through Apollo GraphQL Federation and translate business use cases into clear, durable API contracts.

This is a highly impactful engineering role with ownership of critical production systems that support availability, throughput, and platform reliability at scale. You will influence schema design, query performance, security requirements, error handling, and client integration patterns while partnering across foundational platform teams. You will also help grow GraphQL knowledge across eBay by supporting product teams in migration efforts and championing adoption of best practices.

At eBay, we know diverse perspectives drive better outcomes, and we are committed to building an inclusive workplace where employees feel safe, supported, and able to bring their authentic selves to work. We also offer comprehensive benefits designed to support employees through different life stages, including parental leave, paid sabbatical, and programs that support financial well-being.

What you will accomplish:

  • Lead the design and implementation of federated GraphQL solutions using Node.js, Spring Boot, and DGS to improve how teams build and integrate APIs across eBay’s ecosystem.

  • Own and evolve highly critical production services, helping ensure strong availability, resilience, and throughput for customer- and business-facing experiences.

  • Partner with senior technology leaders, architects, product owners, and adjacent platform teams to turn business needs into scalable API contracts and unified architecture decisions.

  • Drive improvements in query performance, cost analysis, security, error handling, and client integration patterns to enable reliable and efficient GraphQL adoption.

  • Enable product teams on their GraphQL learning and migration journeys by providing technical guidance, reusable patterns, and best practices for federation and schema design.

  • Prototype and refine practical solutions in Node.js or Spring Boot, continuously improving engineering design, development processes, and platform standards as the ecosystem evolves.

What you will bring:

  • 8+ years of software development experience building and supporting production applications or distributed systems at scale.

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with Node.js and/or Spring Boot, with the ability to design, build, and troubleshoot robust backend services.

  • Experience designing, documenting, and governing public APIs, with a strong focus on usability, consistency, and long-term maintainability.

  • Hands-on or transferable experience with GraphQL, including preferred experience with federated GraphQL and schema design; familiarity with Apollo Federation is a plus.

  • Working knowledge of Java and/or Kotlin, plus an understanding of service-oriented architecture, microservices, and modern engineering practices.

  • Strong collaboration and leadership skills, including the ability to influence across stakeholders, mentor less experienced team members, and work effectively with technologies such as TypeScript, Docker, and Kubernetes when needed.
