Software Engineer III

The Enterprise Technology Services organization partners with every part of the American Express business to power the company’s growth and innovation with trust and efficiency, and drive competitive differentiation with speed. We support the delivery and operations of technology, digital, and data capabilities, platforms, and services globally. Specifically, our team is responsible for the company’s technology engineering, architecture, and infrastructure, providing 24x7 support to ensure an uninterrupted, high-quality experience for customers and colleagues. We also provide product management for core enterprise platforms, and lead technology risk and information security, enterprise data governance and platforms, digital product and design, and enterprise AI platforms on behalf of the company.

American Express Global Card Network Platform authorizes and processes all of the company’s customer card transactions. The Card Network platform is the critical back bone for all of American Express card transactions and is a near real time low latency system that is always available and highly resilient, processing transactions from around the world 24x7, 365 days a year. American Express is making strategic investments in new card network products and platforms to allow the company to meet its ambitious global growth agenda. American Express is looking for strong leaders and engineers to be part of high energy and efficient teams that will build and support our next generation card network systems.

As a Senior Engineer, you will be a hands-on engineer building highly available and scalable distributed system on the cloud that supports the company's long-term strategy and vision. Your primary responsibility is design and develop our next generation distributed transaction platform supporting Amex card transactions.

Key Initiatives:

• Card Network Authorizations/Routing, Card Tokenization, Clearing and Settlement
• Omni-channel platforms and partner connectivity management
• Data Localization and Regulatory Compliance
• ATM, Debit, Credit and Push Payment Transactions, Real Time Settlement
• Platform Engineering and Foundational Capabilities of distributed systems
• High Availability, Resiliency and Performance Engineering on Cloud

As Software Engineer III, you will be a hands-on engineer building highly available and scalable distributed system on the cloud that supports the company's long-term strategy and vision. Your primary responsibility is design and develop our next generation distributed transaction platform supporting Amex card transactions.

• Advances the design, development, testing, and deployment of software applications and systems
• Drives the modification, documentation, and maintenance of software to ensure high reliability and availability
• Collaborates with cross-functional teams to address advanced technical challenges and optimize application performance
• Analyzes system requirements and delivers innovative technical solutions to enhance software quality and efficiency
• Completes code reviews and automated testing to maintain high-quality code standards
• Collaborates and co-creates effectively with teams in product and the business to align technology initiatives with business objectives

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, and/or comparable experience
• Knowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, NoSQL and relational databases
• Knowledge of the core tools used in the planning, analyzing, crafting, building, testing, configuring, and maintaining of assigned application(s)

Work Experience:

• 6+ years of hands-on experience building scalable, high-performance platforms and microservices.
• Strong proficiency in Java and microservice architecture.
• Experience in application design, software development, and automated testing
• Experience in object-oriented design and coding with variety of languages
• Experience in distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, and relational databases
• Experience in Agile software development methodologies and practices such as Scrum/Kanban, iterations, user stories
• Experience in automation testing and documentation (i.e. automated, functional, and performance)
