About this role

Overview

Gradient, a Geosyntec Company, is seeking a motivated, experienced and resourceful Senior Scientist to work remote out of their home office in Beltsville, MD supporting our Boston, MA office. The Senior Scientist will contribute to, lead and develop work in the areas of human health risk, chemical hazard assessment, product safety, and regulatory support. The candidate is expected to work independently and collaboratively with scientists in several disciplines (e.g., toxicology, epidemiology, exposure science, human health risk assessment, industrial hygiene, chemistry, and engineering) and should enjoy fast-paced, technically challenging consulting work. Strong candidates will have experience developing and applying toxicological evidence to support systematic review, weight-of-evidence evaluation, regulatory comment, litigation support, product safety assessments, and human health risk assessment in the fields of environmental, dietary, pharmaceutical, pesticide, occupational, and consumer product toxicology. The successful candidate will also be expected to actively engage in business development, cultivate and expand client relationships, and help develop new opportunities and clients that support the continued growth of Gradient’s risk sciences practice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and take responsibility for projects involving toxicology, occupational health, litigation support, regulatory comment, product safety assessments, and site-specific human health risk assessment.
  • Actively engage in business development by identifying opportunities, preparing proposals, building and maintaining client relationships, with the goal of developing an independent client base over time. Collaborate with Gradient and Geosyntec scientists on business development efforts; and specifically help grow our practice in the areas of risk assessment, food/food-contact, pesticides.
  • Qualitatively and quantitatively assess exposure and human health risks from chemicals in the environment and consumer products.
  • Perform analyses including but not limited to systematic reviews, weight-of-evidence evaluations, hazard assessments, dose-response assessments, toxicity value derivation, and preparation of technical tables and summaries.
  • Conduct literature searches and critically review and evaluate toxicology, epidemiology, exposure, and regulatory science studies relevant to chemical safety and human health risk assessment.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with state and federal government programs that develop, implement, or oversee health-based regulations, guidance, standards, and risk assessment frameworks relevant to chemical safety, hazardous waste, environmental health, occupational health, consumer products, and public health protection.
  • Contribute to and oversee the preparation of deliverables (reports, memoranda, proposals, agency comments).
  • Oversee projects of varying scopes and complexity, including establishing technical approach, establishing and meeting budget and deadlines, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, integrating input from toxicology, exposure assessment, epidemiology, risk assessment, engineering, and regulatory specialists, and ensuring that deliverables meet client, regulatory, and scientific expectations.

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in science field, preferably biological sciences or related field. (required)
  • Advanced degree (g., M.S. or Ph.D.) in toxicology, pharmacology, environmental health, public health, or a related field. (preferred)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 8 years (10+ preferred) of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication.
  • Strong technical expertise in toxicology, including the ability to critically evaluate toxicological data, interpret dose-response information, and apply findings in human health risk assessment and regulatory contexts.
  • Experience working in and with state and federal agencies, successfully leading projects that require collaboration between a variety of stakeholders. Demonstrated experience with and responsibility for scope, client communications, project deliverables, budget and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of food, consumer or medical products, pharmaceutical, pesticide, chemical, occupational, or environmental regulations, including experience supporting regulatory submissions, agency comments, risk assessments, or compliance-related evaluations.
  • Demonstrated ability, or strong interest, in business development, including preparing proposals, maintaining client relationships, and developing new clients and project opportunities.

Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified location(s) below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec’s total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

  • Minimum Salary: $123,235/year / Maximum Salary: $199,555 /year (Maryland)
