About this role

Job Description Summary

Bring your hardware expertise, expand into new technical domains, and help integrate them into complete cardiovascular ultrasound systems that make a meaningful impact on patient care.

We are looking for a Senior Hardware Engineer to join our Cardiovascular Ultrasound team in Horten, Norway, where you will contribute to advanced medical-device platforms across the full product lifecycle, from next-generation product development to installed-base support, reliability improvements, and long-term platform sustainability.

Working on industry-leading cardiovascular ultrasound products such as Vivid Pioneer, you will help develop, integrate, verify and sustain complex hardware platforms that enable high-performance medical imaging solutions used by clinicians worldwide.

This role is ideal for engineers who have deep expertise in one hardware discipline and are motivated to broaden their technical scope while contributing to complete system integration. Whether your background is in electronics, embedded hardware, computing platforms, FPGA technology, power architecture, firmware, or systems engineering, you will have the opportunity to grow into adjacent domains while collaborating with experts across multiple engineering disciplines.

Job Description

As part of a diverse and multicultural engineering organization in Horten, you will work closely with electronics engineers, digital/FPGA engineers, systems integration engineers and mechanical engineers, while collaborating with software engineering, sourcing, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, supply chain and supplier partners. You will also work with GE HealthCare ultrasound teams across Europe, the United States and Asia.

We are not expecting expertise in every technical area described below. Instead, we are looking for an engineer with strong competence in at least one relevant hardware field, combined with the curiosity, learning agility, and systems mindset required to understand how individual subsystems come together to form complete ultrasound products.

You will contribute to system architecture, hardware design, integration, verification, platform development, technical problem solving, lifecycle management and reliability engineering activities while helping ensure robust, scalable and maintainable product platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on your experience and areas of interest, responsibilities may include:

  • Backend processing (BEP) and computing platform development
  • CPU architecture, BIOS development and platform firmware integration
  • Board-level electronics design and system integration
  • FPGA integration and associated digital interfaces
  • Power architecture, power distribution networks, batteries and power-management functions
  • Hardware/software integration, system bring-up and platform verification
  • Communication technologies including PCI Express, SerDes, optical links and other high-speed interfaces
  • Hardware interface definition and requirements development
  • Schematic design, PCB reviews, component selection and electronic subsystem integration
  • Prototyping, board bring-up and design validation
  • Functional testing, hardware test methods, automated verification and test infrastructure development
  • EMC, signal integrity and platform-level verification activities
  • Interfaces to operator consoles, displays, controls and external I/O systems
  • Technical investigations supporting manufacturing, field service and customer-reported issues
  • Reliability investigations, root-cause analyses and corrective actions
  • Obsolescence management, component substitutions and risk-based design modifications
  • Lifecycle management of existing platforms and technologies
  • Contributing to system architecture decisions and cross-functional technical reviews
  • Early identification and clarification of technical interfaces, integration requirements, verification needs and technical risks
  • Collaboration with internal and external suppliers throughout product development and lifecycle support

As your knowledge expands, you will gradually assume ownership across multiple technical domains and become a key contributor to the successful integration of complete cardiovascular ultrasound systems.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline
  • Approximately 5-10 years of experience developing, integrating, validating or sustaining complex electronic products or systems
  • Strong technical expertise in at least one relevant hardware discipline
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to understand complex systems and work effectively across subsystem boundaries
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Passion for learning new technologies and continuously expanding technical capabilities

The following experience is beneficial but not required:

  • Medical-device development
  • Regulated industries
  • Safety-critical systems
  • Reliability engineering
  • System integration
  • FPGA-based platforms
  • Embedded computing systems
  • Compliance with medical-device regulations and standards, including IEC 60601 and ISO 14971
  • Engineering documentation, design traceability and risk-management processes

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means becoming a trusted technical partner who can bridge subsystem boundaries and contribute beyond a single area of expertise.

You will:

  • Strengthen technical ownership across the organization
  • Improve system integration and verification effectiveness
  • Help resolve challenging product and reliability issues through structured system-level thinking
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and knowledge transfer across the team
  • Reduce single-person technical dependencies by strengthening collective technical capability
  • Contribute to robust product architectures and long-term platform sustainability
  • Help teams identify technical risks early and establish appropriate verification strategies
  • Build strong collaborative relationships across engineering, manufacturing, quality, sourcing and supplier organizations

Above all, we are looking for an engineer who combines technical depth with curiosity, collaboration, adaptability and a passion for continuous learning, while helping deliver innovative healthcare technologies that improve patient outcomes worldwide.
