Senior Electrical Engineer, Power Systems
About this role
What if you could shape a career as unique as you?
The Senior Electrical Engineer - Power Systems will support WSP's Power & Energy teams by delivering high-quality power system studies and electrical engineering analysis for transmission, distribution, renewable energy, battery energy storage, data centre and other major infrastructure projects. The role will work closely with the Power Systems Analysis and Grid Connections team in Australia, contributing to study planning, network model development, simulations, results interpretation and clear technical reporting. The successful candidate will work independently on defined packages, collaborate across locations and disciplines, and support the development of junior engineers.
Main Activities and Responsibilities:
• Comply with all role-specific SHEQ, quality, governance, ethics and risk-management obligations, and actively apply Safety in Design principles.
• Work collaboratively with Manila and Australian Power & Energy teams, clients, network service providers, OEMs and other engineering disciplines.
• Plan, execute, check and document power system studies for utility, renewable energy and infrastructure projects.
• Develop, update and validate network, plant and equipment models using PSS®E, PSCAD/EMTDC, ETAP and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
• Perform steady-state studies including load flow, contingency, voltage profile, equipment loading and reactive power assessments.
• Perform short-circuit and fault-level studies, including interpretation of results for equipment ratings and design decisions.
• Perform protection coordination and arc-flash studies, including data validation, model setup, results review and reporting.
• Undertake or support dynamic studies, including transient stability, control response, fault ride-through and RMS/EMT performance assessments.
• Support renewable energy and BESS integration studies, grid connection assessments and technical due diligence for wind, solar and storage projects.
• Assess model inputs, assumptions and limitations; identify data gaps, technical risks and practical mitigation measures.
• Prepare clear technical reports, study methodologies, calculation notes, presentations and recommendations suitable for client and reviewer use.
• Conduct self-checks and peer reviews, respond constructively to comments and maintain models, study files and records in accordance with project requirements.
• Coordinate interfaces with primary, secondary, protection, control, SCADA, earthing, cable and civil design teams where study outcomes affect design.
• Contribute to proposals, scopes, fee estimates and schedules, and communicate progress, risks and changes promptly.
• Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge, study practices, automation approaches and lessons learned across the team.
Qualifications (Minimum and Desirable):
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution; postgraduate study in power systems is desirable.
• Typically 5+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience, with demonstrated experience in power system analysis or electrical network studies.
Experience, skills and organisational knowledge:
• Sound knowledge of power system fundamentals covering generation, transmission, distribution, protection and control.
• Practical experience completing load flow, short-circuit/fault-level and arc-flash studies.
• Working proficiency in at least one of PSS®E, PSCAD/EMTDC, ETAP or DIgSILENT PowerFactory, with capability or willingness to work across multiple platforms.
• Experience with renewable energy integration, including wind, solar PV and BESS, is highly regarded.
• Knowledge of grid connection processes, grid codes or utility requirements is desirable; Australian National Electricity Market experience is advantageous but not essential.
• Demonstrated technical writing, analytical problem-solving and quality-control skills.
• Demonstrated experience preparing and maintaining power system models, study cases and supporting input data.
• Experience performing load flow, contingency, short-circuit, protection coordination and arc-flash assessments for HV/MV/LV systems.
• Experience supporting dynamic simulation studies, including model setup, event definition, result plotting, validation and technical interpretation.
• Ability to independently deliver defined study packages while escalating uncertainties, risks and decisions requiring senior review.
• Ability to review models and reports prepared by others and provide clear, evidence-based comments.
• Proficiency with Python and developing automation experience is advantageous.
• Strong written and spoken English, with the ability to collaborate effectively across countries, cultures and time zones.
