About this role

Overview

Reporting to the Director of Institutional Research & Data Quality, the Senior Analyst, Institutional Research supports the research and data analytic agenda of the Office of Institutional Research and Data Quality and is responsible for the compliance agenda, including the completion of federal, state, and other external reporting requirements. The Senior Analyst designs and implements studies to research, collect, interpret, report and/or publish data and information required for compliance with federal and state reports, institutional effectiveness, student success and other research initiatives as required. A focus of this position is to provide in depth analytical and statistical expertise, including developing and maintaining dashboards and infographics, and summarizing and presenting analytic results to inform policy development and institutional decision making.

Responsibilities

Mandatory and Voluntary External Reporting

  • Compile, clean, and validate data for required federal, state and other regulatory reporting such as IPEDS, NJ Office of the Secretary of Higher Education’s SURE file submissions, HESAA reporting, and NJ Department of Education VEDS submissions.
  • Compile, clean, and validate data files for large voluntary reporting efforts such as the Voluntary Framework for Accountability (VFA) and Achieving the Dream (ATD).

 

Research & Internal Reporting

  • Perform research and internal reporting activities, including identifying research questions, designing protocols, collecting or compiling data, analyzing data, interpreting findings to help make sense of the information, and reporting findings.
  • Develop reports to share with various constituencies and responds to ad-hoc data requests.
  • Compile and tabulate routine and scheduled statistics and reporting
  • Use large-scale databases as well as small data sets and appropriate statistical techniques to accomplish research or assessment objectives.

 

Data Visualization

  • Develop, maintain, publish and update data dashboards, annual reports, strategic reports and data and information presented on the department website to report on program and institutional effectiveness.
  • Based on the research question, the data, and the audience, determine the best method for presenting data – narrative reports, charts, tables, graphs, dashboards, scorecards, infographics or other data visualizations
  • Produce reports, charts, tables, graphs, and presentations synthesizing research/outcomes.
  • Present complex information in an understandable and compelling manner.
  • Utilize a variety of visualization tools such as Excel, SPSS, Power BI, PowerPoint or Tableau to present information to college personnel in order to facilitate institutional decision-making.

 

Database & Statistics

  • Use large-scale databases as well as small data sets and appropriate statistical techniques to accomplish research or assessment objectives.
  • Query, create, and maintain working datasets from an ERP/student information system (e.g., Ellucian Colleague, Banner, etc).
  • Research and maintain knowledge of the development, management, and use of relational databases (e.g., Ellucian Colleague, Banner, etc).
  • Utilize accurate and appropriate statistical procedures and sampling techniques.
  • Perform statistics and quantitative data analysis including multivariate techniques, and predictive analytics.
  • Conduct statistical analysis by using software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R), relational databases, syntax/programming and reporting technologies.
  • Analyze data from a variety of sources and makes projections based on data

 

General and Analytic

  • Maintain the integrity of data sources and reports
  • Serve as a data expert for the College protecting the confidential and sensitive nature of a variety of data.
  • Translate quantitative data into usable information for planning, assessment, and other purposes.
  • Design forms and documents for various research purposes and target audiences.
  • Lead meetings and interviews necessary for investigation and data collection.
  • Work as a team member with other college research staff.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Work collaboratively across units in auditing existing processes to identify opportunities for process improvement and to increase the efficiency, accuracy, and consistency of regular and ad hoc reporting.
  • Support the College’s data governance efforts by proactively identifying data issues and working collaboratively in the implementation of effective data management practices and procedures supporting student success, continuous improvement and institutional effectiveness.

Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s degree in statistics, mathematics, computer applications, quantitative social sciences or related field requiring coursework in quantitative analysis, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Experience

  • Three years of experience performing research, reporting, data analysis and analytic functions in higher education. Experience in developing, publishing, and maintaining dashboards, infographics and data visualizations.
  • Recent experience conducting analysis with statistical packages (e.g. SAS, SPSS, Excel).
  • Considerable technical experience with statistical analysis software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R), relational databases, syntax/programming (e.g., SQL) and reporting technologies.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of the concepts, development, management, and use of relational databases.
  • Presentation skills for analytic and complex information
  • Proficient in statistics and quantitative data analysis including multivariate techniques, and predictive analytics.
  • Ability to translate quantitative data into usable information for planning, assessment, and other purposes. The ability to prepare clear and concise reports
  • Programming skills, using SQL or other database languages. Experience with Ellucian Colleague and Insights reporting preferred.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent listening/communication skills and the ability to articulate complex solutions clearly.
  • Must be computer literate with ability to utilize Microsoft Office at an intermediate level and the ability to learn and utilize specific higher education programs and systems
  • Ability to learn and apply office practices, procedures, policies, and regulations that are essential to the position.
  • Fluency in a second language is preferred
  • Ability to travel within the county and state.

 

Preferred Qualifications & Special Considerations: 

  • Knowledge of Monmouth County and its communities. 
  • Occasional evening and weekend work and local travel may be required. Nights and weekends required as needed.
