Job Description

Position Overview

The School Nurse will work to support the student health needs across the KIPP Nashville school community – either at a designated school or support across multiple schools. They will report to the Director of Student Health and in close partnership with the school-based Principal and Director of Operations to prepare for and respond to student and school needs as it relates to student health. Ultimately, our student health team plays a key role in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for KIPP Nashville students. 

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Works to remove, modify, or reduce health-related barriers to learning 

  • Provides well-student care, health care, first aid, immunizations, and assistance to students at their school; creates a comforting and nurturing environment for ill students

  • Provides daily, individual care to students, including but not limited to managing daily medications required by students, administering doctor prescribed medications to students and helping students with physical disabilities

  • Advises the Director of Operations and other school staff as needed regarding initiatives, processes, and systems necessary to ensure a healthy school community

  • Builds emergency preparedness plans and trains all staff on them to ensure staff school-wide are ready for health emergencies

  • Communicates with families around student wellness and health concerns

  • Participates in necessary student health events that may occur on non-school days, e.g., New Student Registration

  • Performs screenings for scoliosis, vision, hearing, height, weight, and/or other conditions and make referrals and follow-up

  • Completes, updates, and maintains student records (accident reports, health records), and completes and submits reports; effectively and efficiently manages the systems for student health paperwork

  • Ensures 100% collection of student health documentation for incoming new students

  • Maintains physical student health files and ensures they are organized and up-to-date

  • Audits student health files annually

  • Transfers all health materials and necessary information for student transfers between campuses

  • Maintains the security of confidential information

  • Collects and maintains student incident forms, ensuring that all applicable parties have documented all pertinent details

  • Collaborates with school staff to create and maintain wellness programming to support healthy opportunities for students

  • Maintains all mandated COVID protocols and holds staff and students accountable to those health protocols.

    Physical Demands

  • Minimal Physical exertion required. Generally, the job requires sitting, standing, and walking.

  • Light work: exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects

  • Possible travel between schools for coverage.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Current non-restricted TN Licensure as a Registered Nurse is required. B.S.N. is preferred. 2 years or more in nursing; Current BLS, First Aid, and AED certification; Associate or Nursing Diploma with Pediatric experience, BSN a plus. Licensed or eligible for RN licensure in Tennessee. Experience in a pediatric setting is preferred.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of evaluation plans and treatment of clients with a variety of illnesses and injuries.

  • Ability to apply current nursing research and theory to daily practice.

  • Skill in patient care and in the use of medical equipment utilized in the area of assignment.

  • Ability to plan and effectively communicate by clearly presenting healthcare-related information and responding to questions from both individuals and groups.

  • Ability to develop and maintain positive and productive interpersonal relationships with co-workers, patients, patient families, and school administrators.

Additional Information

This role is full-time, approximately 10 months of the year, and is eligible for benefits (medical, dental, vision, retirement, and paid time off). The role is paid a competitive hourly rate and is non-exempt from overtime (i.e. eligible for overtime). Pay ranges from $34-$36/hour commensurate with experience. The schedule is typically Monday through Friday, day shift, and works from early August through the end of the school year, as directed by the Director of Student Health.
