We are seeking a highly motivated Researcher to support an NIH-funded project focused on understanding the mechanisms and clinical implications of the cefazolin inoculum effect (CzIE) in Staphylococcus aureus. The successful candidate will contribute to laboratory studies investigating bacterial resistance mechanisms, antimicrobial susceptibility, gene expression, and host-pathogen interactions. This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, microbiology, and translational research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform microbiological experiments including bacterial culture, isolation, and characterization of clinical Staphylococcus aureus isolates.

  • Conduct antimicrobial susceptibility testing, including broth microdilution and inoculum effect assays.

  • Assist with molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, PCR, and gel electrophoresis.

  • Support studies evaluating β-lactamase activity and expression.

  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and experimental databases.

  • Participate in data analysis, figure preparation, and presentation of research findings.

  • Assist with preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, and grant-related reports.

  • Maintain laboratory inventory and ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures.

  • Collaborate effectively with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and the primary investigator.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field.

  • 3 years of prior laboratory experience in microbiology, molecular biology, or infectious diseases research.

  • Familiarity with aseptic techniques and bacterial culture methods.

  • Experience with qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, and basic bioinformatics is desirable but not required.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.

Additional Information:

The pay range for this job profile is $58,700 - $77,200. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.

Learning Opportunities

The Researcher will gain hands-on experience in:

  • Antimicrobial resistance research

  • Clinical microbiology

  • Molecular characterization of bacterial pathogens

  • Mechanisms underlying the cefazolin inoculum effect

  • Data analysis and scientific communication

  • Preparation of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, detail-oriented, and interested in pursuing a career in biomedical research, medicine, pharmacy, infectious diseases, or graduate education. We are not looking for somebody who is a beginner. Ideally 2-3 years of prior experiments working in the lab (even in unrelated fields such as cancer pharmacology, microbiome science, etc) would be helpful. If you are a motivated individual and eager to learn in a bench to bedside translational laboratory, you are encouraged to apply.

Why join our lab?

The P3 Research Laboratory is an ideal place for trainees seeking to grow as scientists. We emphasize mentorship, hands-on training, scientific independence, and professional development. Team members have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to high-impact research, learn state-of-the-art laboratory techniques, and participate in publications and presentations.
