Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Assistant I to join the Biology Department. This is a temporary, part-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits. This position is available for a period of up to ten months from date of hire, renewable depending on performance and funding availability.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to assist with DNA extractions and related molecular biology techniques used in environmental DNA analyses.  The candidate will work with other lab personnel to process and analyze field-collected DNA and animal samples. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBITIES:

  • With supervision, assist with and carry out molecular protocols, including DNA extractions, DNA quantification, PCR, and gel electrophoresis

  • Report and organize data collected

  • Participate in fieldwork including potentially research cruises

  • Desired skills include willingness to learn and be an active participant in an interdisciplinary team, attention to detail and careful work habits, excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and effective communication skills 

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • As deemed necessary by supervisor 

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree. in Biology or a related field, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (transcripts may be requested as part of the interview process), as well as excellent academic and professional references. Prior experience with environmental DNA protocols preferred.
     

Additional Job Requirements

Salary Range: $22.08/hour - $28.33/hour

The salary range provided for this position reflects the expected minimum and maximum base pay for new hires. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as internal equity and market conditions. In addition to base salary, eligible employees also receive a comprehensive benefits package.

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to ability to lift less than 25 lb per day and carry up to 10 lb per day. Other physical duties may include reaching above and below the shoulders, stooping/kneeling, and climbing ladders/stools. Must have the ability to use hands for basic grasping/manipulation as well as fine manipulation. Activities such as pipetting may include repetitive motions. Visual abilities to include depth perception, ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus, and ability to distinguish basic colors. The occupational requirements for this position are the ability to work with and around other individuals in a lab setting as well as alone. Visual abilities of near vision needed as well having the ability to hear, respond, talk, and travel. May be exposed to hazardous substances or specimens. Physical duties are subject to change.
