About this role

Role Overview

The Regional Voter Protection Directors will work closely with the Voter Protection Director, Deputy Voter Protection Director, and other partners to implement a program that prevents and addresses election administration challenges. They will also recruit and support a large volunteer team in their designated region. We are seeking individuals who are passionate about voting rights.

Core Responsibilities

  • Organize and support in-county leaders and volunteers to monitor key components of the voting process and mitigate/resolve problems that arise
  • Cultivate existing community relationships to provide nontraditional engagement opportunities for incorporating voter education, volunteer recruitment, and protecting the vote
  • Maintain regular contact with the county leaders and volunteers in your region, including proactive check-ins and responding quickly to questions and concerns about election administration and voting and documenting these appropriately
  • Facilitate trainings for volunteers on a variety of election administration topics
  • Recruit volunteers for the program’s various roles, including poll watchers, program support volunteers, and election administration point people, through attending in-person events, reaching out to community leaders in your region, and leading and participating in phone banks to call potential volunteers
  • Collaborate with other members of the team to identify, gather information on, and address voting problems throughout the state

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of professional experience; this is not an entry-level position. Experience on political campaigns, in non-profit environments, in the legislature, as a paralegal, or a myriad of other environments including but not limited to teachers, former poll workers, and active community members are all great preparation for this role.
  • You should be able to communicate complex information in a way non-legal audiences understand and engage with concepts
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders, including election officials, party leaders, volunteers, grassroots organizations, and coalition partners.
  • Customer service skills: You maintain professionalism under pressure and take a responsive, productive approach to all stakeholder and volunteer interactions.
  • Public speaking and communication skills: able to facilitate training sessions, speak at public meetings to promote volunteer opportunities, and run phone banks.
  • Demonstrated commitment to voting rights, voter access, and electing Democrats at every level of government.
  • Strong lens and judgment on issues of race and equity, a sophisticated understanding of racial equity and structural racism as it relates to our work, and an awareness of voter suppression’s disproportionate impact on marginalized communities.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours (nights and weekends) as Election Day approaches, and during Early Vote and Election Day operations.

About the Texas Democratic Party

Founded in 1846, Texas Democrats continue the march towards a state as great as its promise.

A fair shot for all, that’s what drove Democrats to build this great state, and that is what drives us today. A belief that no matter who you are, what you look like, where you come from, or who you love if you work hard in Texas, you can make it.

We believe democratic government exists to achieve as a community, state, and nation what we cannot achieve as individuals.

We believe in equal opportunity, fairness, freedom, family, community, and a responsibility to ourselves and each other. These are the values our elders passed down to us, the values we hope to share with our children, and the values we expect from our elected officials.

The Texas Democratic Party is a movement of millions of Texans coming together to fight for our Texas values. We know our state cannot succeed when the deck is stacked against working Texans and their families.
