JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Overview

The R&D Laboratory Technician I is an entry level position providing support for common R&D laboratory operations functions. The position entails following detailed instructions and established procedures with frequent supervision. Responsibilities include lab organization, general lab and equipment maintenance, consumables inventory and stocking, reagent generation, and miscellaneous initiatives to help the lab run efficiently.  Additionally, this position assists with sample management of both non-infectious and potentially infectious materials. The R&D Laboratory Operations Technician I is expected to follow all laboratory and safety policies, procedures, and reporting practices.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist with warehouse inventory of supplies and consumables.
  • Conduct routine inspections of labs to identify housekeeping, consumables, and safety requirements.
  • Organize consumables in lab areas and stockrooms.
  • Assist with freezer defrosting, inventory, and organization.
  • Responsible for timely and thorough stocking of lab supplies and consumables.
  • Responsible for maintaining available and unexpired disinfecting reagents in labs.
  • Participates in lab and lab equipment cleaning activities.
  • Assist with coordinating lab equipment calibrations with Metrology.
  • Assist with setting up new or relocated labs and lab equipment.
  • Operate and maintain scientific instrumentation with appropriate documentation.
  • Participates in Environmental Health and Safety initiatives in the lab.
  • Utilize communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through both verbal and written communications.

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds for approximately 10% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to utilize step stools and ladders.
  • Ability to safely utilize a pallet jack and hand truck.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability and means to travel 5% between local Exact Sciences locations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school degree/general education diploma.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with common laboratory and scientific instrumentation terminology.
  • Basic computer skills to include Internet navigation, Email usage, and word processing.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with common laboratory and scientific instrumentation terminology.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Associate degree in biotechnology or field as outlined in the essential duties.
  • 1+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with SAP and computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Experience with inventory systems like Kanban and/or inventory management software.
  • Hands-on experience with lab instrumentation including real-time PCR platforms, centrifuges and robotics platforms.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of common chemicals utilized in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience using facilities and instrument monitoring systems.

The base pay for this position is

$16.35 – $32.65/hour
