About this role

About You

You're a designer who believes learning should feel like play. Even for serious learners. You know how to design experiences that are challenging, but approachable and enjoy thinking about the rhythms of practice, the satisfaction of progress, and the small moments of delight that keep someone coming back. You understand what makes a habit stick.

You sweat the details and take care to think about the impact of each pixel in your own work. Above all, you have a passion for designing well-crafted, engaging product experiences that help people learn and have fun.

What You'll Do

  • Own the design of the Courses product experience at Chess.com
  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Copywriters, and leadership to help define the problem and build effective product experiences together
  • Craft polished, high-quality designs for our web and mobile platforms that follow Chess.com design patterns, make use of our design system, and keep players engaged
  • Design how players learn new concepts from interactive courses and master them through habit-forming spaced repetition practice
  • Present your design proposals and clearly articulate your decisions, backing them up with contextual rationale, heuristics, and user insights where possible
  • Build interactive prototypes to share and quickly test ideas using agentic tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and Figma Make
  • Own your projects from initial concept through to implementation and help ensure design-to-code alignment throughout the process
  • Be proactive about suggesting and designing meaningful improvements to our product to make it more fun, social, and consistent across platforms
  • Help uplift your design teammates and provide constructive design feedback

Preferred Skills

  • 3-5 years of experience working as a Product Designer on a consumer facing product or game
  • A portfolio of your best design work that demonstrates a clear understanding of interface and user experience design
  • Mastery of UI design fundamentals including typography, color, layout, visual hierarchy, alignment, contrast, and interactivity
  • A clear understanding and experience designing responsive and interactive user interfaces for mobile apps and the web
  • Experience working with a large, established design system
  • Familiarity with frontend development and how design translates into code
  • Experience using AI tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and Figma Make to build shareable high fidelity prototypes to share and quickly iterate on
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills working in a remote, globally distributed team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that allow you to document and explain your design decisions
  • A sense of ownership, pride, and responsibility for your craft

  • We are 100% remote (work from anywhere!)
