About this role

About Solace

Healthcare in the U.S. is fundamentally broken. The system is so complex that 88% of U.S. adults do not have the health literacy necessary to navigate it without help. Solace cuts through the red tape of healthcare by pairing patients with expert advocates and giving them the tools to make better decisions—and get better outcomes.

We're a Series C startup, founded in 2022 and backed by Inspired Capital, Craft Ventures, Torch Capital, Menlo Ventures, Signalfire, and IVP. Our U.S. based team is lean, mission-driven, and growing quickly.

Solace isn't a place to coast. We're here to redefine healthcare—and that demands urgency, precision, and heart. If you're looking to stretch yourself, sharpen your edge, and do the best work of your life alongside a team that cares deeply, you're in the right place. We’re intense, and we like it that way.

About the Role

As Product Counsel, you'll be a trusted legal partner for the Product organization. This isn't a role for someone who wants to review finished specs from the sidelines. Reporting to the Head of Commercial Legal, you'll counsel teams from the earliest design conversations through launch, implement privacy-by-design across the company, and give practical, real-time advice that balances legal risk against the speed the business needs. The role is remote but requires occasional travel, including to Solace's headquarters in Redwood City, California.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the primary legal partner to Product and related-Engineering teams, advising across the full product lifecycle—from early design through launch—so that legal risk is identified and addressed early rather than at the finish line.

  • Consider privacy-by-design across Solace: advise on data flows, the collection, use, and protection of PHI and other sensitive data, and compliance with HIPAA/HITECH, state consumer-health-privacy laws (e.g., Washington's My Health My Data Act), CCPA/CPRA, and other applicable U.S. privacy and security requirements.

  • Lead privacy assessments for new features and services, including AI-powered features, and translate the results into concrete product requirements.

  • Partner with Marketing on advertising claims, consumer-protection and FTC considerations, and ad-tech practices.

  • Draft, negotiate, and maintain the user-facing legal layer of our products—terms of service, consents, privacy notices, and telehealth-related disclosures—and keep them current as products and regulations evolve.

  • Advise on data-sharing arrangements and vendor/partner integrations that touch product data, coordinating with the commercial and compliance teams on BAAs, DPAs, and related terms.

  • Build the templates, playbooks, and self-service guidance to support a fast-scaling product organization without becoming a bottleneck.

  • Partner cross-functionally with Security, Compliance, Operations, and Finance, and know what to escalate to the Chief Legal Officer and leadership.

What You Bring

  • JD from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.

  • 3-6 years’ experience counseling product and engineering teams on privacy and technology matters.

  • Strong healthcare privacy and data-protection foundation—HIPAA/HITECH plus U.S. state privacy laws—ideally in a healthcare, digital-health, or other regulated environment.

  • Fluency across the product-counsel toolkit: AI/ML, intellectual property, consumer protection, and advertising/marketing law.

  • Sound instincts on risk versus velocity, and the judgment to land on real answers instead of hedges.

  • Excellent communication and cross-functional skills—you can boil a complex issue down to a bottom line product and engineering can act on.

  • Nice to have: privacy certification (e.g., CIPP/US); experience with health-data marketing/ad-tech; and familiarity with telehealth or marketplace models.

Applicants must be based in the United States.
