Job Summary

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Investigator (PDI) in Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department focused marine radioactivity in the ocean, including applications of natural radionuclides for the understanding of the ocean biological carbon pump, as well as ocean radioactivity measurements in response to releases from nuclear facilities, such as from the nuclear power plants at Fukushima Dai-ichi.

Job Description

Essential Functions & Duties 

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Investigator to work on projects related to marine radioactivity in the ocean, including applications of natural radionuclides for the understanding of the ocean biological carbon pump, as well as ocean radioactivity measurements in response to releases from nuclear facilities, such as from the nuclear power plants at Fukushima Dai-ichi. 

Required Experience & Education 

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D and experience and publications in the applications of thorium-uranium disequilibria in ocean science, including field sampling, analyses, modeling and interpretation of results.  In addition, understanding and the willingness to use alternative particle flux tools, such as sediment traps and camera-based systems would be essential.  Seagoing experience and the ability to function in a complicated ship-based environment needed, including physical ability to be lifting/moving sampling gear on deck, and processing samples at sea.  

Background in radiochemical analyses of marine samples in the lab is important, in particular as it pertains to beta counting.  Skills needed in writing (manuscripts and proposals), data processing (modeling, graphical), and presentation of results (lectures, PI gatherings).  This is largely an in-person position, though some work can be done remotely.  

Travel 

Travel will be required for research cruises and appropriate conferences and gatherings.  Funding will be through WHOI’s Center for Marine Radioactivity, working largely on projects under the supervision of Dr. K. Buesseler, and/or new projects initiated by the PDI in collaboration with Dr. Buesseler’s lab group.
