Job Summary

Aptive Resources is hiring a PICU Registered Nurse to join our team of talented professionals who provide health care services to our Military Service Members and their families at Bremerton - Madigan Army Medical Center. HCWs shall receive notification 48 hours prior to the reassignment to another location within a 40-mile commuting radius of their assigned MTF

  • Employment Status: Full Time
  • Schedule: 0700 โ€“ 1900 and 1900 - 0700. +Holiday and weekend coverage.

Primary Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Perform critical care duties including assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating age-specific nursing care across all age groups
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of body systems' interrelationships in maintaining and restoring patient health
  • Observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress; assist physicians during treatments and examinations
  • Administer medications and prescribed treatments; complete admissions and discharges
  • Manage patients requiring hemodynamic monitoring, vasopressor titration, and high-risk procedures (pulmonary artery catheters, arterial/central venous lines, ventricular drainage devices, chest tubes, feeding tubes, endotracheal tubes, and mechanical life support)
  • Monitor and interpret data collected by LPNs and unlicensed assistive personnel, escalating to medical staff as appropriate
  • Verify transcription of physician orders and document all care in the patient's medical record

Documentation & Communication

  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation per standard operating procedures, including patient/family history and advanced directive information
  • Communicate pertinent patient information to charge nurses and/or physicians
  • Provide handoff reports to receiving units, including surgical history, nursing diagnoses, and care needs

Patient & Family Support

  • Function as a patient advocate
  • Assess patient/family knowledge levels and develop/implement education plans
  • Instruct patients and families on proper care; support health maintenance and improvement

Medication Administration

  • Administer medications using the "five rights" via IV, subcutaneous, oral, transdermal, rectal, and IM routes
  • Research medications for compatibility prior to administration
  • Chemotherapy administration requires documented specialized training (excluded otherwise)

Emergency Response

  • Recognize and respond to life-threatening crises; initiate lifesaving measures in the absence of a physician
  • Maintain knowledge of emergency drug pharmacology, dosages, and crash cart contents
  • Operate emergency equipment (defibrillator, EKG, cardiac monitor, etc.)
  • May serve on Rapid Response or emergency code teams

Specialized Procedures

  • Assist with or perform invasive procedures per scope of practice (pulmonary artery catheter insertion, balloon pump management, temporary pacemaker insertion, arterial punctures, endotracheal intubation)
  • Manage tissue/skin bank and organ donor bank procedures
  • Provide conscious sedation only after completing MAMC-provided training

Direct Patient Care

  • Perform ADLs including range-of-motion exercises, transfers, hygiene care, linen changes, and feeding
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to plan and implement care

Leadership & Coordination

  • Apply knowledge of workload and staff capabilities to allocate/redistribute resources as patient needs shift
  • Participate in patient care conferences, discharge planning, and multidisciplinary care conferences for complex cases
  • Maintain composure and positive rapport with patients, families, and staff, including in high-stress situations

General Duties (All Personnel)

  • Maintain productivity comparable to peers in similar roles
  • Participate in peer review and performance improvement activities
  • Follow aseptic technique and infection control protocols (handling/disposal of infectious waste, universal precautions)
  • Apply safety procedures and emergency protocols; remain calm, notify appropriate staff, and document events
  • Escalate unmanageable issues to supervisor/director
  • Apply legal awareness to reduce risk in patient care
  • Support Family Advocacy Program activities (exams, documentation, reporting) as directed
  • Respect patient/family rights per MTF policy
  • Maintain accountability for own professional practice and pursue continuing education
  • Complete required annual training (disaster response, infection control, sexual harassment prevention, bloodborne pathogens, fire/safety, CBRNE, etc.)
  • Participate in Performance Improvement Program meetings and recommend corrective actions
  • Provide in-service training and mentorship to staff (e.g., corpsmen, students)
  • Attend required meetings and complete timely, accurate clinical documentation

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree/Education: A diploma, Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate in Nursing from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
  • Certifications: Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support (5.2.3): Advanced Life Support (ALS) health care provider course or an equivalent course based on published national guidelines and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Experience: One year of qualifying experience as an RN and one year of qualifying experience in this specialty.
  • Licensure/Registration: Contract workers requiring licensure shall have and maintain a current, valid, unrestricted license specific to the position (with no limitations, stipulations or pending adverse actions) in one of the 50 US States and/or territories.
