To deliver high-quality maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repair services for freight wagons across the UK rail network. The On-Call Fitter works a 12-day rotating shift pattern (4 x 12-hour shifts, 4 x 24-hour on-call, 4 days off), ensuring operational readiness, safety compliance, and customer satisfaction

Safety

  • Comply with all Health & Safety legislation and company procedures.
  • Conduct dynamic risk assessments and ensure safe systems of work are followed.
  • Maintain compliance with PPE and site-specific safety protocols.
  • Report safety concerns and participate in incident investigations.

Quality

  • Ensure all maintenance and repair work meets industry and customer standards.
  • Accurately complete maintenance records, fault reports, and inspection sheets.
  • Support continuous improvement and defect trend analysis.

Delivery

  • Respond to urgent call-outs for wagon faults, derailments, and brake issues of which is likely to be anytime from 00:00 – 23:59 Monday – Sunday.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance, component replacements, and safety inspections.
  • Liaise with terminal staff and train operators to minimise disruption.
  • Ensure tools, parts, and documentation are prepared before attending site.
  • When on-call, supporting from 9AM – 3PM with technical support for any internal requirements for as long as reasonable.

Cost

  • Record time, parts, and consumables used to support cost tracking.
  • Minimise downtime and optimise resource use during interventions.
  • Support inventory control and report usage of parts and consumables.

Operations

  • Maintain vehicle and equipment readiness for on-call duties.
  • Participate in 5S and lean initiatives at customer sites and depots.
  • Support project delivery, commissioning, and modification programmes.

People

  • Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to team briefings.
  • Maintain professional conduct and represent the company positively.
  • Participate in training and development activities.

Qualifications

NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or HNC/HND level / NVQ Level 4 / Foundation degree.

Experience in freight wagon maintenance; fault finding and repair skills; ability to work independently; good communication and IT skills

Full UK driving licence; ability to work unsociable hours and travel

PTS or equivalent site access certification
