Job Description

The Middle School Humanities & Language Arts Teacher will design and implement engaging, student-centered instruction that develops students’ skills in reading, writing, communication, critical thinking, history, culture, and the exploration of diverse perspectives. The ideal candidate is passionate about working with middle school students and creating a classroom environment where students feel challenged, supported, and inspired to become confident thinkers, readers, writers, and members of their community.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a genuine passion for teaching and supporting all learners.
  • Create and maintain a student-centered classroom that promotes curiosity, collaboration, critical thinking, and respect.
  • Plan and develop an engaging, age-appropriate Humanities and Language Arts course of study aligned with Oregon standards, school curriculum guidelines, and educational best practices.
  • Design lessons that integrate reading, writing, discussion, research, history, social studies, culture, and other humanities-based learning experiences.
  • Establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives effectively to students.
  • Facilitate students’ cognitive, social, and emotional growth through purposeful instruction and meaningful learning experiences.
  • Adapt teaching methods, instructional materials, and assessments to meet students’ varying learning needs, abilities, interests, and confidence levels.
  • Provide instruction to students individually and in groups using a variety of instructional strategies, including discussion, direct instruction, demonstrations, collaborative projects, research, presentations, and independent work.
  • Encourage students to develop strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to express ideas thoughtfully and respectfully.
  • Foster students’ ability to analyze texts, evaluate information, think critically, make connections, and consider multiple perspectives.
  • Establish and maintain clear expectations for behavior, classroom procedures, and respectful interactions.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and plan assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers while present in the classroom.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade assessments and assignments to evaluate student learning and progress.
  • Provide consistent, meaningful, and timely formative feedback to students.
  • Implement Oregon Core Standards with rigor, purpose, and intentional planning.
  • Monitor and document students’ academic and social growth, maintaining appropriate records including grades, report cards, attendance, and other required documentation.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents/guardians, administrators, and colleagues regarding student progress and needs.
  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, guest speakers, service-learning opportunities, and other experiential learning activities.
  • Participate in professional meetings, educational conferences, professional development, and teacher training opportunities to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support student success and contribute to a positive school community.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications

You have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
  • A current Oregon teaching license with an applicable endorsement preferred.
  • Experience teaching middle school students preferred.
  • Experience teaching Language Arts, Humanities, English, Social Studies, or a related subject area.
  • A strong understanding of adolescent development and the unique academic and social needs of middle school students.
  • A commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment.
