About Us
The Sugar Zone Project, owned by Vault Minerals, is located in Ontario, Canada, approximately 35 km north of White River, between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste Marie, and represents the company’s only asset outside Australia. It is an underground gold mining operation that utilises longhole open stoping, a method well suited to narrow, high-grade vein-style deposits. The operation is supported by an on-site processing plant with a flowsheet that includes crushing and ball milling, followed by gravity gold recovery and sulphide flotation to produce a gold concentrate. The plant has an installed processing capacity of approximately 0.32 million tonnes per annum, equivalent to around 900 tonnes per day.

Technical Responsibilities, challenges and Role Accountabilities 

  • Design underground mine infrastructure
  • Follow up on the monthly targets compliance to plan progress and advise stakeholders.
  • Review, design and schedule the Monthly and Annual to 36-month rolling forecasts
  • Ensure the annual budget goals are achieved in Short Range rolling forecasts
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve efficiency and productivity.
  • Identify strategies to optimize mining process to increase mine production 
  • Professionally, coach and train junior engineering staff
  • Coordinate with the Long-Range and Short-Range planners to ensure the operational plans align with long term objectives.
  • Promote innovation and continuous improvement in safety by reviewing existing engineering designs and new designs.
  • Promote and adhere to Company environment and sustainability policies.
  • Support the yearly budget and company business planning exercise.
  • Optimize grade control and minimize dilution through effective incorporation of geologic data and tasks in mine plan.
  • Liaise with Geotechnical team and incorporate guidance into mine plan.
  • Provide guidance to operating departments to maximize production, plan their activities and accurately measure key mining parameters.
  • Conduct regular and thorough inspections of all work areas to ensure compliance to engineered plan.
  • Manage consultants and contractors on engineering projects.
  • Contribute to the preparation of engineering studies.
  • Mentor and coach Engineers in Training and Junior Engineers.



Experience, qualifications, and essential skills required

  • A Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering or equivalent engineering degree.
  • Must have experience in scheduling using Deswik.Sched
  • Strong working knowledge of Deswik.CAD
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and in good standing order with PEO and or eligible for membership with the PEO,
  • A minimum of 4 years of mine operation and engineering experience in underground mine,
  • Underground mine design, mining engineering, mine scheduling, and high level of understanding of underground mining activities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications, particularly Excel & PowerPoint.
  • Strong communication (written, listening, oral) and Presentation skills
  • Ability to be creative (not just use past practices) and promote new ways of doing things to maximize the value of the mineral resource.
  • Ability to provide guidance to support the skills development of junior technical personnel
  • Knowledge and understanding of short range mine planning and scheduling, underground mine operations, maintenance engineering, project management, and mine design preferred.
  • Ability to form relationships and collaborate – practices teamwork and collaboration within and between areas.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and is realistically persistent when facing obstacles and overcomes challenges.
  • Adaptable and flexible and can quickly understand the context of change and proactively adjust when necessary.
  • Strong team and leadership skills
  • Strong leadership ability is essential
