A Brief OverviewThe Medical Laboratory Scientist analyzes blood and body fluids using both automated and complex manual methods following established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes.

Responsibilities

What you will do

  • Verifies routine results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability using prescribed guidelines.
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Receives guidance and direction from more experienced team members or lead.
  • Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s)
  • assigned.
  • National Certification such as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or
  • American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred.er.
  • Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
  • Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.
  • Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver. Regularly reports all unusual findings to the immediate supervisor.
  • Regularly reports work activities and pending work to the oncoming technologist.
  • Responds to work related technical inquiries as needed.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Baptist Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Baptist Health policies and procedures.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Performs specimen collection procedures, specimen receiving and processing as required.
  • Answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.
  • Maintains current job knowledge in order to effectively instruct students or other personnel.
  • Responsible for an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program.
  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records, hospital and departmental matters at all times

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Completion of an accredited medical laboratory scientist program
  • National Certification as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or equivalent, or eligible for board certification required. Certification required within 6 months from hire.
