Job Description

About the Opportunity 

Lead the Mechanical Workshop team in delivering high-quality mechanical assembly, fabrication, welding, and machining services that support research, teaching, and external projects. Using a range of workshop equipment, including lathes, milling machines, water-jet cutters, and welding equipment, you will provide technical expertise, coordinate resources and priorities, and work closely with the Workshop Manager to ensure successful project delivery.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance to the Workshops Manager on equipment, maintenance, training, and operational matters.
  • Plan and deliver fabrication, repair, and engineering projects, from procurement through to completion.
  • Oversee daily workshop operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality service delivery.
  • Work with clients to define project requirements, timelines, and outcomes.
  • Support the scheduling, prioritisation, and allocation of workshop resources.
  • Lead and mentor the Mechanical Workshop team, maintaining quality standards and resolving technical issues.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance workshop performance and efficiency.
  • Promote a safe, professional, and well-organised workshop environment.

About you

  • The occupant of this position will hold relevant tertiary qualifications and subsequent relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated competency in tig welding skill of both aluminium and stainless steel.
  • This role also involves working with a range of materials, including metals, plastics, timber, and composites, and the operation of workshop equipment used for manufacturing, machining, fabrication, assembly, and prototyping activities. Experience across these broader technical functions, particularly in the operation of CNC manufacturing equipment and associated technologies, would be highly regarded.

This is a continuing position primarily based at Griffith University Brisbane South (Nathan) campus. As Griffith is a multi-site university, you may be required to work across other locations.

Salary

HEW 7 – base range $104,504.60 - $113,219.43 + 17% superannuation. Full package range - $122,270.38 - $132,466.72.
