Overview

The NFAC provides the United States with the capability of performing ground‐based aerodynamic and acoustic experiments at speeds from static to nearly 350 mph on large‐scale and full‐scale aerospace vehicles and components. This complex includes a 40‐ by 80‐foot wind tunnel and an 80‐ by 120‐foot wind tunnel.

 

AEDC’s mission is to conduct developmental test and evaluation for the Nation through modeling, simulation, ground test and flight test. Execution of the mission requires a large team of highly qualified and dedicated professionals from multiple technical disciplines to effectively accomplish the objectives of our test customers.

Job Summary

Under the guidance and direction of an experienced engineer the successful candidate will evaluate, select, and apply standard mechanical engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria to support wind tunnel testing, facility operations and maintenance at the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC) and perform the duties listed below.

 

Job Duties:

  • Perform work, generally within mechanical engineering, involves the preparation, interpretation or review of calculations, specifications, plans, investigations, surveys, structures, systems or equipment.
  • Responsibilities include the mechanical design of wind tunnel model components and interface hardware; developing design drawing packages (Solidworks/Autocad experience desirable); developing and reviewing hand calculations for mechanical, structural, and stress analyses reports; working closely with customer and test team to establish design requirements; guiding design proposals through internal approval processes; lead projects through entire lifecycle (planning, budgeting, scheduling, execution, and close out); coordination and supervision of NFAC technicians and outside contractors; asset management of facility systems and subsystems; troubleshooting and creating repair work orders; and supporting the institution of predictive maintenance principles.
  • Hands-on field work is expected and multidisciplinary experience maintaining facility mechanical (hydraulic and pneumatic power, compressors, pumps, etc.), electrical (motors), and control systems (PLC, instrumentation) is highly desirable.
  • The working environment is highly dynamic and will require assisting and supporting the management of several projects simultaneously.
  • Position will be surrounded with a staff of technicians and engineers of varying disciplines, so the ability to work well and effectively communicate with others is critical.
  • It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.

Responsibilities

Basic Qualifications:

  • Accredited B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering .
  • H07: Minimum of 2 years of experience in a related field.
  • H08: Minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance and the AEDC local area network.
  • Current U. S. Citizenship required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active secret clearance
  • Multidisciplinary experience maintaining mechanical facility (hydraulic and pneumatic power, compressors, pumps, etc.), electrical (motors, generators), and control systems (PLC, instrumentation) is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply design and engineering concepts to provide effective solutions

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations and refers to the amount BNH is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time jobs will be adjusted based upon the number of hours agreed to work.

 

H07: $104,000 - $143,000; H08: $128,000 - $176,000 /year at location California: NFAC, Mountain View, CA.
