Job Description

  • Join a Member-First Superannuation Fund Provider 
  • Provide In-House Legal Advice to Business Units, Board & Management 
  • Sydney Located | Hybrid Working (CBD Office & Remote)

Rest’s in-house Legal team is led by the General Counsel and includes Investment Legal, Enterprise Legal and Member Legal.

Primary Purpose

“Build trust through the provision of legal services that enable Rest to harness its strategic risks”

This role reports to the Head of Member Legal and provides legal advice to Rest business units, management and the Board on Rest’s legal rights, duties and obligations.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and guidance to the business on legal and regulatory obligations relating to:
    • superannuation products, including disclosure and distribution;
    • member communications, interactions and other external-facing materials prepared for members;
    • digital marketing, social media, website and app content;
    • financial advice;
    • general trustee matters, including the SIS Act and Corporations Act as they apply to Rest;
    • estate and family law matters as they apply to Rest members; and
    • life insurance as it applies to Rest members.
  • Provide legal input and support on projects, including participation in project teams and legal review of related documents and communications.
  • Maintain a sound working knowledge of regulatory matters and regulatory change relevant to Rest.
  • Advise stakeholders on proposed and actual regulatory changes as required.
  • Participate in industry forums on regulatory change and communicate relevant outcomes to internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare and review relevant Rest policies as required.
  • Contribute to legal reports for the Board and Board Committees as required.
  • Liaise with external legal providers, auditors, fund administrators and where appropriate, regulators.
  • Contribute to a safe and healthy workplace by complying with Rest’s WHS policies and management system.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws or appropriate business/law degree with admission in an appropriate jurisdiction.
  • Hold a current Australian state based practising certificate

Required experience, understanding or credentials including:

  • High integrity and sound professional judgement, with a strong commitment to acting in members’ best financial interests.
  • Prior experience in legal roles, with financial services and superannuation experience highly regarded.
  • Strong understanding of the legal and regulatory obligations that apply to superannuation funds and trustees.
  • Strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify legal, commercial and risk implications for Rest.
  • Excellent drafting and plain-language communication skills, including the ability to translate complex legal requirements into clear, member-centric communications.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines across multiple matters, campaigns and projects.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders across Rest and its strategic partners.
