About this role

Imagine working at the forefront of innovation in fluid-flow technology, with over 1,400 colleagues across the globe and eight manufacturing facilities on four continents. Armstrong Fluid Technology is a community of the brightest and most creative minds, driven by a shared mission to engineer the future and safeguard our planet.

In this role, you will research, design, and develop the electrical systems at the heart of a next-generation critical infrastructure product — serving one of the fastest-growing and most demanding applications in our industry. The electrical scope spans the full power chain: automatic transfer switches, VFDs and motor controllers, pumps, disconnect switches, redundant power supplies, motor protection breakers, and overall electrical safety of the product.

This is a standardized product development role. The product will be manufactured on scale, so every electrical design must be repeatable and reliable, released with standard Bills of Materials (BOMs), controlled drawings, and clearly documented functionality. You will mature the product from proof-of-concept prototypes through pre-production and into production, working alongside mechanical, hydraulic, controls, and embedded software engineers.

Key Accountabilities

Electrical Research, Design & Development

  • Design the complete electrical architecture of the product: dual-feed 3-phase power input, automatic transfer switch, disconnect switches, branch circuit protection, and motor breakers — with protective devices selected and coordinated for high-fault-current environments.
  • Research, select, integrate, and validate electrical systems — designed for production and serviceability.
  • Design redundant control power supplies, precision power metering, and a spill-protected electrical panel with service-accessible breakers and connectors.

Electrical Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Own the electrical safety design of the product: protective device selection and coordination, grounding and bonding
  • Drive global product safety and EMC compliance
  • Ensure designs conform to applicable electrical codes and standards (NEC/CEC, UL/CSA/IEC, IEC 61439 and 60204-1, IEEE 519, NFPA 70E), and drive the required product certifications
  • Support electrical DFMEA/risk assessments and design reviews

Standardized Product Development & Release

  • Develop electrical designs as standard, repeatable products
  • Mature the design through structured prototype phases
  • Collaborate with different disciplines and represent electrical design in technical reviews.

What We’re Looking For

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Eng designation is required
  • Minimum 10 years of experience designing industrial or mission-critical electrical systems
  • Proven experience in designing industrial automation electrical systems
  • Hands-on experience taking a product through regulatory requirements for global markets.
  • Demonstrated experience with engineering change management, BOM and drawing release, and configuration control within a formal product development lifecycle
  • Proven experience in designing and developing electrical panels including load analysis

Technical Skills

  • Electrical Power Systems & Rotating Machines system knowledge
  • Industrial panel design including all the electrical components
  • Safety, EMC & Integration
  • Instrumentation integration
  • Critical infrastructure, mission-critical power, or HVAC product experience is a strong asset
  • HVAC equipment and its electrical characteristics — chillers, air-handling units, cooling towers, fans, pumps, compressors, and heat pumps — including how such equipment is powered, started, controlled, and protected
  • Power distribution — 3-phase distribution, switchgear and disconnects, transformers, automatic transfer switches, branch-circuit protection, load balancing, and short-circuit and protective-device coordination studies
  • Power supplies and power metering — redundant and UPS control power, DC power supplies, and precision power and energy metering for power-quality monitoring
  • Motors and drives — AC induction and permanent-magnet motors, VFDs and soft starters, motor starting and protection, drive parameterization, and harmonics mitigation

Standards & Codes

  • Electrical codes — National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1)
  • Product and machinery safety — UL/CSA/IEC 60335 and 60730, UL 508A (industrial control panels), and IEC 60204-1 (electrical safety of machinery)
  • Assemblies and switchgear — UL 891 and IEC 61439 low-voltage assemblies, including SCCR determination
  • Electromagnetic compatibility — FCC Part 15, CISPR 11 / EN 55011, and the IEC 61000 series
  • Power quality and rotating machines — IEEE 519 (harmonics), NEMA MG 1 and IEC 60034
  • Workplace and arc-flash safety — NFPA 70E and CSA Z462
  • HVAC and energy efficiency — ASHRAE 90.1, AHRI ratings, and applicable refrigeration-safety standards

Soft Skills

  • Ability to simplify complex problems, conduct root cause analysis, and provide clear recommendations.
  • A product mindset — designing for repeatability, reliability, and scale, with the discipline to follow standard documentation and release processes.
  • An ability to communicate openly and authentically in all situations.
