Title:

High Energy Laser Systems Technician

Program Summary

Kord, a wholly owned subsidiary of KBR, is a leader in advanced defense solutions with a strong focus on directed energy and High Energy Laser (HEL) technologies. Our HEL programs support the U.S. Department of Defense in developing, integrating, testing, producing, and fielding cutting-edge laser weapon systems that enhance national security and deliver decisive battlefield advantages. These efforts require highly skilled technicians to support assembly, integration, production, testing, maintenance, and operational deployment of complex laser systems and their associated power and thermal management subsystems.

Job Summary

The High Energy Laser Systems Technician will play a critical role in the assembly, integration, production, testing, troubleshooting, and field support of advanced HEL weapon systems. This hands-on position supports the development and deployment of laser technologies by working directly with laser hardware, power distribution equipment, thermal management systems, electrical and mechanical assemblies, instrumentation, and supporting subsystems.

The technician will collaborate closely with engineers, production personnel, test teams, and program leadership to ensure HEL systems are built, integrated, tested, maintained, and fielded safely and effectively. This position requires strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to support laboratory, manufacturing, and field operations.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assemble, integrate, and maintain High Energy Laser system hardware and associated subsystems.

  • Support production and manufacturing activities, including hardware builds, inspections, configuration management, and process documentation.

  • Install, route, terminate, and troubleshoot electrical wiring, cable assemblies, connectors, and subsystem interfaces.

  • Assemble and integrate power distribution, power conditioning, energy storage, and thermal management equipment supporting HEL operations.

  • Perform system-level and subsystem-level integration activities for laser, power, cooling, controls, and support equipment.

  • Execute test procedures and support developmental, qualification, acceptance, and operational testing activities.

  • Operate test equipment and instrumentation to collect, record, and document system performance data.

  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, thermal, and laser system issues and support root-cause investigations.

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on laboratory, production, and fielded equipment.

  • Support environmental testing, field demonstrations, customer events, and operational exercises.

  • Assist engineers with hardware modifications, system upgrades, prototype development, and technical documentation.

  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures, laser safety requirements, quality standards, and program operating procedures.

  • Travel as required to support system integration, field testing, customer demonstrations, and deployment activities.

Basic Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, Laser/Electro-Optical Technology, or related technical discipline and a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience supporting complex electrical, mechanical, or electro-mechanical systems.

  • In lieu of degree a high school diploma and 6 years of experience is required.

  • Experience performing hardware assembly, system integration, troubleshooting, and testing activities.

  • Experience working with electrical systems, power distribution equipment, thermal management systems, cooling systems, or industrial equipment.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, assembly instructions, and technical documentation.

  • Experience using electrical and mechanical test equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and diagnostic tools.

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve hardware and system-level issues.

  • Ability to work in laboratory, manufacturing, and field environments.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • U.S. Citizenship required and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting High Energy Laser, directed energy, electro-optical, aerospace, or defense systems.

  • Familiarity with laser safety requirements and laser laboratory operations.

  • Experience with power generation, power conditioning, energy storage, or high-voltage electrical systems.

  • Knowledge of thermal management systems, chillers, pumps, heat exchangers, and liquid cooling equipment.

  • Experience supporting manufacturing, production, low-rate initial production (LRIP), or depot-level sustainment activities.

  • Prior military experience supporting electrical, weapons, radar, aviation, communications, or mission systems.

  • Experience supporting field testing, customer demonstrations, or operational military exercises.
