About this role

Overview

The Government Relations and Health Policy Fellow will be fully integrated with Joint Commission’s Government Relations office in Washington, DC. This fellowship program provides hands-on experience with the legislative and regulatory process, including interactions with Congress, federal agencies, state policymakers, advocacy organizations, and industry stakeholders. The fellow will gain experience with the intersection of federal and state work and accreditation organizations, an understanding of Congress’s role in healthcare and relationship with accreditation organizations, and learn how regulations help to share healthcare delivery, with a specific focus on quality and patient safety aspect of healthcare delivery.   The fellow will conduct policy research, legislative and regulatory monitoring, and develop materials for various government engagements.

 

The Government Relations fellowship offers recent undergraduates with the opportunity to learn skills particularly in research, analysis, and writing. In addition, the internship provides an opportunity to understand the role of government relations offices.

 

September – June

Responsibilities

  • Participate in government relations activities, with a particular focus on congressional engagements (40%), executive branch, state policies, associations, and other relevant government relations activities.
  • Under direction of Director, Federal Relations, assists with efforts to further congressional relationships.
  • Engage and collaborate with across Government Relations Departments on initiatives to support government relations roadmap and strategic priorities.
  • Conduct policy and legislative research projects related to Joint Commission public policy priorities.
  • Track federal and state legislative and regulatory developments that could impact Joint Commission operations and priorities and prepare summaries for internal stakeholders.
  • Support the development of external policy maker-facing communications materials, such as slide decks, factsheets, issue briefs, and other resources.
  • Maintain policy tracking tools, issue databases, and legislative calendars.
  • Attend briefings, conferences, and Capitol Hill events and provide read-outs from meetings and/or events.
  • Support external meetings with other stakeholders and officials as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Preference for recent graduates from graduate or undergraduate programs with exposure to public policy.
  • Demonstrated interest in healthcare policy issues.
  • Experience conducting policy research, drafting policy documents, briefing materials, or advocacy communications.
  • Familiarity with the legislative and regulatory process.
  • Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Research and analysis experiences.
