About this role

Telexistence develops remote controlled robots with artificial intelligence, with the mission to change robots, change the structure, and change the world. Gathered by high expertise professionals from all over the world, the engineering team consistently develops robotic hardware, software and AI technology in-house. TX aims to expand the scope of robotics activities beyond the factory floor and transform the fundamental nature of labor society.

The Firmware Engineer will be developing software for the microcontroller to enable the communication between the sensors and actuators on the robot and the high-level computing systems. This will involve Embedded/Microcontroller level software development, hardware bring-up, and contributing to the architecture/platform development. This role is ideal for a candidate who has experience in microcontroller firmware development experience for a product that is out in the market.

Responsibilities

  • Firmware & Linux Driver Development: Design, write, and debug efficient, production-grade code in C and C++ for microcontrollers (MCUs) and Embedded Linux platforms controlling the behavior of microcontrollers and its connected sensors and/or actuators..

  • System Integration: Integrate robotics middleware (ROS) to bridge high-level compute systems with other systems running low-level firmware, sensors, and actuators.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with software, hardware, and mechanical teams to define interfaces, integrate sensors/actuators, and ensure robust system performance.

  • Technical Documentation & Quality: Maintain clear system documentation, write clean maintainable code, and participate in code reviews to ensure long-term software quality.

  • Lifecycle & Market Reliability: Drive the full product development lifecycle—designing for safety, handling edge cases/abnormal conditions, and performing root-cause failure analysis for market issues.

Requirements

  • Core Technical Stack: 5+ years of experience developing in C and C++ for resource-constrained and real-time environments, paired with Python and other languages for scripting and automation.

  • Embedded Linux and Firmware: Deep proficiency with real-time applications and RTOS, along with practical experience in developing device drivers and resource constrained mass-produced products.

  • Middleware & Protocols: Practical experience with ROS/ROS2 and standard communication protocols (CAN, UART, I2C, SPI) for real-time data acquisition.

  • Communication: Excellent cross-team communication skills with a strong focus on technical writing and system documentation.

Preferred Skills

  • Motor & Motion Control: Deep expertise in motor control algorithms for DC/BLDC motors, PID loop tuning, and Field-Oriented Control (FOC).

  • Embedded Protocols & Hardware: Direct experience with CAN/CANopen, FreeRTOS (or other RTOS), and STM32/ARM microcontrollers.

  • Language Skills: Japanese conversational skills for collaboration with other departments/teams.

Position Location will be at Telexistence's Headquarters Office (Heiwajima, Tokyo) or another location designated by the company.

The role assignment may be modified based on organizational requirements. This could include changes to your job responsibilities, reporting structure, or team assignment.
