We are seeking a highly skilled Field Service Engineer to join our Service team in Scotland
this is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer with strong electrical, electronic and mechanical troubleshooting skills who enjoys working directly with customers and solving complex technical challenges in the field.

As a Field Service Engineer, you will play a critical role in supporting, maintaining, installing and repairing our advanced detection and screening systems at customer sites across Scotland You will be a key customer-facing representative, ensuring equipment reliability, operational performance and outstanding service delivery.

Preference given to those living in Glasgow / Edinburgh areas.

The Opportunity

Reporting into the Service organisation, you will provide technical support across a range of Smiths Detection products, delivering preventative maintenance, installations, repairs and customer training.

You will work closely with Service Management, Programme Management, Sales, Product Specialists and customer technical teams to ensure the highest levels of customer satisfaction and equipment uptime.

What you will be doing:

  • Install, commission, maintain and repair Smiths Detection equipment at customer locations.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, electronic, mechanical and system-related faults.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance activities to agreed schedules.
  • Deliver operator-level training to customers and end users.
  • Complete service documentation, inspection records and technical reports accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Manage spare parts inventory, ordering and returns processes.
  • Review service logs and investigate recurring issues to identify root causes and improvement opportunities.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to customers and internal service teams.
  • Assist with site surveys, pilot programmes, installations and special projects.
  • Support service revenue opportunities through proactive customer engagement.
  • Ensure tools, test equipment and calibration records are maintained to company standards.
  • Work collaboratively with Product Specialists and senior engineers to remain current on product developments and technical trends.
  • Maintain compliance with all company Health, Safety and Environmental policies.
  • Travel extensively throughout Scotland and occasionally support activities outside normal working hours when required.

Qualifications

  • HNC, ONC, Associate Degree, technical apprenticeship or equivalent engineering qualification in Electronics. 
  • Proven experience in field service, maintenance, technical support or repair of electrical and electronic systems.
  • Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills across electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Experience working with customer-facing service environments.
  • Good computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, schematics and manuals.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel extensively across Scotland

Desirable

  • Experience with mechanical systems and air-conditioning systems.
  • Experience supporting security screening, detection systems, X-ray technology or other complex technical equipment.
  • Knowledge of SAP, reporting systems and service management tools.
  • Experience using metrology equipment and handheld diagnostic tools.
  • Previous experience providing technical or operator training.
  • Experience within highly regulated industries such as aviation, defence, security, manufacturing or transportation.
