About this role

Benchmark Utility Services is a fast-growing design-build and underground utility construction firm. Our field crews and equipment are the engine of everything we build, and this role is how we keep that engine running in the field.

The Role

The Shop / Field Equipment Mechanic is a mobile, field-based maintenance professional responsible for providing on-site mechanical support to Benchmark’s heavy equipment and work vehicle fleet at various locations across roadways and active construction sites. You’ll report to our Sterling, VA shop at the start of each day and be dispatched to project sites throughout the region. This is Benchmark’s first line of defense against equipment and vehicle downtime in the field — fluid maintenance, tire service, hose repair, and preventive maintenance tasks that keep crews productive and projects moving.

What You’ll Do

  • Report to the Sterling, VA shop daily; receive dispatch assignments and load the mechanics truck before departing
  • Perform fluid checks and top-offs on heavy equipment and work vehicles — engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, gear oil, DEF, transmission fluid
  • Perform field tire service including inspection, inflation, repair, and replacement on heavy equipment and dump trucks
  • Fabricate, repair, and replace hydraulic hoses and fittings in the field; pressure-test all completed repairs before returning equipment to service
  • Repair or replace rubber hoses, coolant hoses, air lines, and fuel lines
  • Perform basic field diagnostics; determine whether a repair can be completed in the field or requires shop return
  • Conduct pre-dispatch inspection of the service truck each morning; verify tools, supplies, and safety equipment
  • Submit a field service report for every site visit on the same day work is performed
  • Consistently and comprehensively update the vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance logs upon completion of each service

What We’re Looking For

  • 2+ years of hands-on mechanical experience with diesel heavy equipment, construction vehicles, or trucks
  • Demonstrated ability to perform fluid maintenance, tire service, and hose repair and replacement
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic hose identification, fabrication, and replacement
  • Sound judgment on field repair vs. shop return decisions
  • Strong organizational habits; ability to maintain a clean, well-stocked service truck
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; ability to legally operate a service truck
  • Ability to lift 75+ pounds regularly

Bonus Points

  • 3–5+ years of field service experience on heavy civil construction equipment
  • Experience fabricating hydraulic hoses using a bench-mounted hose press
  • CDL Class A or B
  • ASE certification in Medium/Heavy Trucks (T-series)
  • OSHA 10 Construction certification
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • A high-urgency, high-independence role for a mechanic who wants to be in the field, not the shop
  • Daily variety across multiple project sites and equipment types
  • Competitive compensation, on-call pay for after-hours emergency response, and comprehensive benefits
