About this role

Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Overview

As Joby Aviation expands into Ohio, we are seeking an Environmental Health and Safety Program Manager to serve as the primary site lead for Environmental Health and Safety. This is a high-impact, individual contributor role designed for a professional who can navigate high-level regulatory strategy while maintaining a consistent, hands-on presence on the manufacturing floor. You will be responsible for building and scaling the EHS framework for our new location from equipment installation to full-scale production, ensuring all processes meet OSHA, EPA, and NFPA standards. As a trusted advisor to Ohio site leadership, you will be instrumental in blending technical safety strategy with daily "boots-on-the-ground" execution to scale our safety culture from the ground up and ensure our people and processes remain protected.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain comprehensive EHS policies and industrial hygiene programs tailored to the Ohio manufacturing operations, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and local regulations
  • Review operational processes and equipment designs to assess potential safety and health hazards, and recommend engineering and administrative controls to mitigate risk before production begins
  • Support the EHS lead with regulatory agency and industry organization engagement; oversee all site regulatory reporting (hazardous waste, chemical inventories, SDS programs) to ensure accurate and timely submissions
  • Partner with operations, manufacturing, and facilities leadership to align EHS goals and integrate safety initiatives with principles like 5S, Visual Management, and Kaizen
  • Direct and conduct formal EHS audits, inspections, and safety walkthroughs; identify compliance gaps and ensure the implementation of corrective actions to resolve unsafe conditions
  • Provide direction for incident investigations and root-cause analysis (RCA) in coordination with the entire safety team; oversee Workers’ Compensation claims and return-to-work programs
  • Establish and oversee technical EHS training programs, ensuring delivery is effective, accessible, and tailored to our Ohio operations
  • Oversee contractor and service provider compliance to ensure adherence to Joby’s EHS standards
  • Monitor, track, and report EHS performance metrics, leveraging data to identify trends and drive continuous improvements for site-wide operational excellence

Required

  • BS in Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental, Safety Engineering, Aviation, Safety, Physical Sciences, Health, or similar technical field
  • 5+ years of experience in EHS roles with a demonstrated track record of increasing responsibility
  • Experience designing and delivering safety training in manufacturing
  • Proven track record performing comprehensive risk assessments and Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) for routine and non-routine operations, managing laboratory safety, and driving site compliance through rigorous inspections and ergonomic assessments
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams and lead site-wide initiatives as an individual contributor
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910, OSHA 29 CFR 1926, EPA standards with the ability to interpret complex regulations for operational staff

Desired

  • Professional certification (CIH, CSP, ASP, or CHMM)
  • Experience in management system implementation
  • Experience implementing behavioral based safety (BBS) programs
