Overview

The Engineer I supports WGI’s Transportation team in San Antonio, Texas, with traffic engineering, safety, operations, and mobility assignments. Working with experienced engineers and project managers, this entry-level role helps analyze transportation data, develop recommendations, and prepare technical deliverables for public-sector transportation projects.

 

The Engineer I works under the direction and review of licensed engineers while building proficiency in transportation engineering methods, software, and applicable standards. The role includes field observations, coordination with other disciplines, and opportunities to present findings as technical skills and professional judgment develop.

Responsibilities

  • Support transportation engineers and project managers with traffic engineering analyses, calculations, exhibits, reports, and project documentation under supervision.
  • Participate in project meetings and coordinate assigned tasks, schedules, and follow-up items with the team.
  • Summarize data, methods, findings, and recommendations in technical memoranda, reports, and presentations for internal review and, as appropriate, clients and the public.
  • Coordinate with roadway design and other project teams to communicate safety and traffic operations findings and support conceptual improvements.
  • Assist with crash data reviews and safety analyses to identify potential improvements, including use of the Highway Safety Manual and crash modification factors as appropriate.
  • Conduct field reviews and help document existing safety, operational, and mobility conditions at intersections, interchanges, freeways, and arterial corridors.
  • Assist with traffic operations analyses for existing and future conditions using tools such as Synchro, VISSIM, and Highway Capacity Software, with guidance from senior staff.
  • Help prepare traffic and safety reports, feasibility studies, and preliminary engineering documentation; develop familiarity with applicable standards and agency requirements.
  • Support transportation planning and project development assignments, including data collection, alternatives evaluation, and coordination with public agencies as assigned.
  • Participate in training, mentoring, and professional activities to strengthen technical and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, transportation engineering, or a related engineering field from an accredited four-year institution.
  • 0–4 years of relevant engineering experience; transportation project or internship experience is a plus.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or intent to obtain within six months, consistent with the Engineer I profile.
  • Technical Skills
  • Familiarity with transportation analysis or design tools such as Synchro, VISSIM, Highway Capacity Software, OpenRoads, MicroStation, or AutoCAD is a plus; ability to learn project-specific tools is required.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO guidance, the MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, Highway Safety Manual, and applicable accessibility requirements is a plus.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills;
  • Microsoft office skills – including Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Travel to other offices or project locations may be required.
